Rather liked this letter in yesterday's 'i' newspaper, responding to the Hobbit farce:"
"Now that the Hobbit pub has been told by the company that owns the Lord of the Rings merchandising rights to stop using the name, I wonder what will happen to my local, the Star Wars Return of the Jedi & Duck."

I've just heard that the Queen is about to take legal action on all pubs called The Crown!

A WORKING men's club is threatening to ban one of its members for his flatulence.
Dave Marriott has been causing a stink and now he has been warned that if he doesn't stop, he will be barred.

"Last orders for your local
Has your nearest pub become a Tesco Express? Protesters find themselves virtually powerless to stop supermarkets taking over"
Depressing of course. The most depressing thing is all those people who claim to want to save their local pub, yet only ever go in there on Christmas Eve, then become Tesco's best customers when the pub is gone. Tesco will then say they're simply providing what people want.
Mine is currently being converted, opens next month. In this case the protesters shot themselves in the foot, they objected, successfully, against a nearby derelict and empty petrol station becoming a Tesco Express.
Tesco went away licking their wounds, made an offer to Enterprise Inns that could not be refused, local, viable pub closes to become Tesco express
I drink to make others more interesting
It's not my local, but a JDW pub fairly near me (The Grid Inn) has found itsef in the daft position of Tim Martin actually paying Tesco to take the lease off his hands. It always seemed a viable business to me, although it did have some competition from an inferior (in my opinion) pub next door that seemed to have cornered the market in decorative twigs!
Tescos have been closing pubs down for years,i have just found a photo on the Lost Pubs project site showing the Black Swan Vaults in central Nottingham with a Tescos sign
outside it, this photo was taken in 1960.
I would provide a link but i hav'nt got the faintest idea how to do it.
Just copy the URL (that's the address thingy that begins www at the top of the page) and paste it here:
