I wonder if this is part of the reason?
We need to wait till after the restrictions are lifted to get a true figure of what pubs are going to stay closed.
I know this prickly subject has been touched upon, before. However, it seems to be gaining momentum. Personally, I won't be giving my card details, or paying a deposit to drink in a pub. Plus, I think it's rather presumptuous of Charlie Rogers to say £5 is just over the price of a pint and it also knocks on the head the idea of 'cherry picking' on a pub crawl. Sometimes, if there's nothing I fancy on a pub's pumps, I'll do an about turn and move on.

In general I agree with you.
However, on the other side of the coin, the other Friday I called in one of my locals, The Flying Horse, Of the 5 tables in the room I was sitting in 4 were no-shows and they'd only managed to fill 2 of them from walk-ins.
Some people are just arseholes!

A pub is for life not just for Christmas
I think there's a distinction to be made between pubs and restaurants. Most of the people interviewed in the article were restaurateurs, not publicans. I wouldn't pay a deposit to have a beer, and as Andy says, what if they don't have anything you fancy?
I have only booked a pub once so far, because it was a micro in a popular area, and I was meeting my daughter and her partner. But in fact having been told our preferred time was unavailable and booked the preceeding two hour slot, we then found ourselves the only customers!
This weekend I have booked a table for lunch at a pub in Hathersage, which is a bit of a long way to go only to find the place full up! I wouldn't have minded paying a deposit if they had asked, but we're planning on eating rather than just having a few beers, so it would have been reasonable.
Come On You Hatters!
Wenlock is not currently open Mon-Weds.
Would have been nice of them to mention that on their website, before we walked up there yesterday...
