Then there are reviewers who never give a rating. And there's one reviewer with plenty of reviews under his belt who always scores a 10.

And pubs with a rating under one manager and a much better (or much worse) rating under another.

I may have mentioned this stuff before when you were originally working on this 100 best pubs list, Dave. I like what you've done with it, and it's now much better than I thought it could ever be. But I struggle to see how it can ever be reliable, as the whole business of rating pubs is inherently inaccurate.

It is a risky thing to be doing. Conrad & I chatted at length about it back in the day and were never in favour as these things inevitably get gamed if they are high profile enough. It used to happen on BITE.

However the site has become quite a niche thing with a fairly small number of reviewers, many of whom know each other from this forum and crawls so ultimately it is an interesting exercise for us to find places that like minded people enjoyed. Supposing the site suddenly gains popularity amongst people who like pubs that show live sports then we'll have some very odd pubs making the list.

Basically I'm saying it is not so much about being reliable as just interesting.

I suppose in theory you could construct a formula weighting score by inaccessibility to show up the 'hidden gems'!

I really like that idea. Might try that at some point.

Good points, Dave. Yes, interesting rather than reliable. A bit like all those lists that appear in the Yet Another List thread.

It'll be even more interesting once you incorporate Graham's idea of hard to reach pubs, with a sliding scale going from 100 metres to 20 kilometres from the nearest railway station.

Cool! I see that the list is one way to mark pubs as "Visited" (some just updated - thanks). However, I'm totally unclear as to whether there are other ways to get the tick - it's something I could easily waste several hours of my time doing (so I'm obviously keen to give it a go).

The visited pubs tab is up the right on each area page... so for West Midlands the visited pubs tab is on the page for Bilston, Birmingham, Brierley Hill, and so on...

I presume the Pub Facilities button came in around the same time? Although it's not the easiest way to add them, having had a brief look. I wonder what else is hidden away on here that I've failed to find.
