Tutbury & Hatton on Tuesday, 14th April 2026
This is a trip that has been developed on the Beer & Pubs Forum, and now that we're going ahead with it I've also mentioned it on Discourse. Apologies to those who are also members and contributors on there, for the repitition.
The route can be imagined by following this link.
In detail, here is the plan:
Arrive by train either on the 11:49 from Stoke on Trent (arr.12:23) or the 12:26 from Derby (arr.12:38). Train times are exact, pub timings are subect to variation.
Dog & Partridge 12:45 - 13:20 Traditional country town hotel
New Inn 13:25 - 14:00 Black Country Ales
Cask & Pottle 14:00 - 14:30 Micropub
NB This pub is shown on Google as opening at 12 and closing at 2:30pm, then opening again at 5pm. (The CAMRA website shows the same early hours, but strangely omits the evening reopening.) I have sent a Facebook message to the pub but had no reply. I sent an email but this was rejected by the online postmaster. This micro is between the Dog & Partridge and the New Inn, so we can check it out on the day. If it is not open, other times will be adjusted accordingly.
Vine 14:30 - 15:05 Marstons
Leopard 15:10 - 15:40 Bass
Walk (less than five minutes) to bus stop at Lower High Street for Villager bus at 15:47 to Hatton.
The Tavern (formerly the Railway Tavern) 15:55 - 16:40 Free house (opens 3pm) Bass
Bus stop close to the pub for the 401 bus at 16:43. (There is a Villager at 16:27.) For those averse to buses, it’s a 25 minute walk from the Leopard to the Tavern, and about 30 minutes back to Tutbury for the next pub.
Cross Keys 17:00 - 17:30 Burton Bridge DBA (opens 5pm)
[8. Cask & Pottle 17:35 - 18:10 If this pub turns out to be open in the evening but not at lunchtime!]
Trains depart for Derby at 17:24 (for those who think the Cross Keys will be a pub too far) or 18:24. To Stoke at 17:39 and 18:39. A 10 minute walk from the micropub, but a 15 minute walk from the Cross Keys.
Anyone who wants to join us will be very welcome.

Trying to make the pub crawl tool more useful. Can now add train stations, notes about pubs, notes about getting between pubs. So I've taken this as an example and added some more info.

That's brilliant, Dave. I look forward to testing it in the field on 14th April. Were you thinking of joining us?

I hadn't really seriously considered it, but it looks just about doable at not too bad a cost. Will decide nearer the time, but maybe! Looks like it would be a nice day out.

We've got one participant coming from Frome, so it's definitely doable from Bristol. Hope you decide in favour!

I do, but I also enjoy pub research trips (and one pays, the other costs)!
