Default Pubsgalore Crawl in Chesterfiield on Novenber 7th 2025

With 14 options,I have posted all Fridays and Saturdays from mid October to end November.I guess anything earlier than October 17/18th would have been too difficult to get rail or hotel cheap deals.

Be aware that the London - Sheffield line is blocked at Leicester on Sat 15th Nov, which will no doubt cause chaos on the rest of the route as well.
On leaving the bar, I felt a strong blow to the back of my head. Turning round, I discovered it was the pavement

I need to pull my votes as we've been given the no-leave notice for November. Nothing to do with any malfunctioning car company I'm sure 🤔

Yes That right, even pulling Spinko's votes it's still the winner.

Can some kind person with admin rights possibly change the title of this thread to something like Pubsgalore Crawl in Chesterfiield on November 7th 2025 so that we can start to discuss which pubs to visit and likely route, the 2026 GBG entries do seem to be spread out across town.

Indeed. In your first post on the original thread you wrote:

"Chesterfield .....with the late openers in Brampton start at Chesterfield station, crawl the Brampton mile and bus back." But the best pubs are not necessarily on the Brampton Mile! One possibility is the opposite of your suggestion (!) to catch a bus from the station to Brampton and choose the best pubs on the way back. (See note below.)

Looking at pubs with two or three pint glasses on the CAMRA website's display of recent beer scoring averages, these are:
    Rose & Crown (GBG)
    Britannia
    Victoria
    Original Gravity
    Real Ale Corner (Opens 3pm)
    Anchor (GBG) (Opens 3pm)
    Tramway Tavern (Opens 2pm)
    Brampton Bierhuis
    Junction
    Chesterfield Alehouse (GBG)

Already 10 pubs and we're only just back on the edge of the town centre. I would prune the Tramway (beer quality varies) and the Junction (food oriented); the Original Gravity and Real Ale Corner are both bottle shop/micropubs, and the Bierhuis is a brewery tap, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't call in for a swift half!

Pubs in the centre that meet the same criterion (two or three beer glasses): Portland Hotel, Market, Barley Mow, Royal Oak, Rutland Arms, Spa Lane Vaults, Pig & Pump, Neptune Beer Emporium and (last but definitely not least) the Chesterfield Arms. (GBG entries in bold)

And then out towards - and just past - the football ground we have Glassworks, Beer Parlour and Derby Tup. (For strong walkers or keen bus riders, these.)

    I believe that's 22 pubs, or a Lesser Winfield.

Note re buses from the railway station. The 170 bus leaves the station at 26 minutes past each hour; the 11:26 arrives near the first pubs in Brampton about 10 minutes before they open. There are other buses but this means walking into town from the station - allow 10 minutes to Stephenson Place for the 90A at 12:15, or 15 minutes to the bus station for the 84 at 12:27 or the same 90A at 12:22.

    Excellent suggestions, thanks Will
Another proposal could be, due to the couple of 3 pm openers on the Brampton Mile, meet up and knock off a couple in town, then cab or bus it to the Rose and Crown and crawl back to the station via the Chesterfield Arms , Rutland Arms e.t.c.

Will has produced a great long list, and your suggestion does make sense to accomodate the late openings .I assume we will start the crawl around midday, and that quite a few of us will be looking for a train around 7pm so this outline plan has a lot of merit.

OK in that case heres a starting suggestion...

As a Newbie to Chesterfield I've focussed on the potential must do's and a visit to the Brewery Tap and come up with a possible running list.
Unfortunately the ones round the football ground do seem a step too far for all in one day

    1. Pig and Pump
    2. Rutland Arms
    3. The Market
    Bus or Taxi to........
    4. The Rose and Crown
    5. Real Ale Corner
    6. The Anchor
    7. Brampton BierHaus
    8. Chesterfield Ale House
    9. Chesterfield Arms
    10. The Neptune Beer Emporium
And then a 15 min stroll to the station...
Can add Wild Cards around these and obviously lots of time to modify..

Thanks for the suggestion, Steve. It got me thinking. If someone said to me "I've got two hours in Chesterfield, which pubs can you recommend?", I wouldn't say Pig & Pump, Rutland Arms and the Market, good pubs though they undoubtedly are. In my opinion none of them are outstanding.

I would say, start at the best: get yourself up to the Chesterfield Arms - it's about a 15 minute walk from the station. Then, as luck would have it, there's a bus every 30 mins (90A at 13:13) from Sheffield Road, not far from the Chesterfield Arms (take a short cut through the grounds of Holy Trinity church, which you'll have passed on the way from the station). Take the bus through town and along Chatsworth Road which is also known as the Brampton Mile.

You could stop at any point along there and find a pub, though not all have cask beers. The best is at the far end on Old Hall Road in Brampton village: the Rose & Crown. Alight at Walton Road End, just before a roundabout and next to a Morrisons supermarket car park. Cross the road and go round the corner and you're there. It's a 15 minute bus ride and you can track the bus on this website: bustimes.org.

There's an earlier bus, the 90 at 12:43, and another at 13:43. (The Neptune just around the corner from the Chesterfield Arms doesn't open until 3pm.) But assuming we get to the Rose & Crown at around 13:30, there are four potential wild cards within five minutes walk - ok, one of them opens at 3pm but I can't see that being a problem. Then the Anchor is a bit back towards town, then the Brampton Bierhuis and the Chesterfield Alehouse.

The Market, the Royal Oak, the Rutland and the Pig & Pump are all fairly handy for the station so it makes sense to leave them to the end, I reckon. (I don't know how the Barley Mow got onto my list of town centre pubs yesterday - today it doesn't have the requisite credentials! I hope I wasn't hallucinating. )

Your suggestion has the advantage of being able to do the Neptune as well as the Chesterfield Arms, but I reckon the CA is worth doing as a first pub. It has beer quality, beer variety (up to 10 beers on the bar), an in-house brewery with two or three usually on - good 'uns, too - and it's a lovely, well looked after pub interior (no heritage awards, but it looks good). I did a circuit in Chesterfield with Retired Martin and some other GBG tickers, and the CA was the last pub. Everyone had a good time, but they were well oiled by the time they got there. I recommend we make it the first pub instead.

The Rose & Crown in Brampton also has 10 cask beers on, split between Brampton Brewery and guests. (Like the CA, it always has Everards Tiger on.) As I said at the top, I rate this and the CA the best and that bus makes it possible to do them both with only a 20 minute gap between pubs!
