"Good people drink good beer" Hunter S Thompson
I'm looking forward to us all trying to squeeze into the Patch!
WE ARE THE BREADMEN - UP THE BEES ![]()
I'm not sure if I'll be attending but I do have a few thoughts / suggestions regarding the trip. Please feel free to ignore or criticise!
The first concerns Harvey's Sussex. Of the 12 principal pubs, you will probably encounter the beer in all but The Patch & Abyss, and it's likely to be on in The Black Horse & The Swan off the reserve list as well. Obviously, at its, umm, best, it's one of Britain's classic ales and some crawlers may be intent in sampling it on home turf. However, I wonder if some of the pubs might be regarded as secondary (I'm particularly thinking of Rights Of Man & The Dorset). Some of the Harveys pubs may still have Old on (recommended) and there's up to 3 seasonal ales available around about this time of year, in case a little variety is needed.
Second: by all accounts, The Snowdrop isn't what it once was, and the walk down South Street always seems longer than expected, so could be dropped to optional status, particularly as its later in the day. The Black Horse, conversely, has I think a better claim for inclusion, even if its located even further off the route.
A word on gradients seems opportune, particularly if anyone's tempted to go from The Kings Head or The Swan to The Brewers or Black Horse - its a steep climb up Keere Street, or the parallel routes! Station Street from The Landsdown is probably the easiest of the uphill options. High Street drops steeply down to the river, so the walk back to the train station from the Southover area is easy enough.
Should be a good day out, whichever places are visited - weather's looking pretty much ideal.
Keeping breweries in business for more than 40() years
Thanks, Paul. This looks like sound advice.
I've visited Brighton several times in recent years, but Lewes not since about 10 years ago. I've often found both the Sussex Best
- and the Old for that matter - served in substandard condition, and have only found it as it should be in the Royal Oak in Borough. No doubt there's a better chance of finding it in good nick within a few yards of the brewery, but your suggestions are very welcome.
I hope you'll be able to make it - it's been too long!
Come On You Hatters!
