I think the three annual crawls may make more sense, perhaps with a bias towards Saturdays.
I also think that more crawls may dilute attendance but feel that sub-crawls may also have this effect, i.e. if for example a venue like Rugby is chosen for a sub-crawl, then if it becomes the venue for an official crawl, then this may result in lower attendance.
Perhaps the best way is for a person to advertise that they are doing a crawl of an area and anyone's invited?

My position remains as it usually is - if I am working a contract, then the chances of me doing a Friday are slim because no work = no pay. If I'm on a fallow period (this has not yet happened in the 21 months since I switched from being an employee - I have been in demand!) then I can do any day.

And from my perspective, Fridays are likely to be the only date during the working week that I'm likely to make, and this can help avoid (or at least minimise) the perils of weekend railway engineering works.

...not to mention the perilous stag and hen parties, and pub crawlers. I mean the ones with heavy make up, who have left their coats at home, that have to get tanked up before even getting to the station, and drink lager or cocktails all the way to Leeds, or Manchester, or Blackpool.

Yes even with family and friends now, Saturdays are more likely to occur in satellite towns of the bigger cities. Solo treks to York or Durham or similar on a Saturday will be something like 10:00 to 14:00 then head off.
