Default Pubs Galore Crawl Autumn/Winter 2024

Is it time to start talking times and places in the midlands (wherever that is)?
Personally I would put forward Nottingham, I know that's a repeat but last team visit was thirteen years ago, plus I've never been so gets my vote. Lets get some more suggestions in.

Personally I wouldn't have a problem with Nottingham and it was mentioned by a couple of others on the Halifax crawl who were not on this site when we went last time.
and this is despite visiting in June when I visited two good ones that we did not do the first time around, The Sir John Borlase Warren and The Angel Microbrewery

And I have a soft spot for Nottingham as it was the first outside London PuG crawl I attended.

Nottingham is a good call and there have been lots of new micropubs/real ale bars/brewery taps and so on that have opened since the last PuG crawl.

I was going to suggest Chesterfield but a lot of decent pubs are in Brampton which at the farthest point represents a 30 minute walk back to the station so I'm not sure how practical an idea that is.

The glaring omission for PuG trips to the Midlands when measuring citys is Coventry, but I am not sure if there is enough there in the centre to sustain a decent crawl. The current GBG has 6 City centre entries in Coventry compared to 9 in Nottingham.

Spoke with Nev about Coventry briefly Friday evening, I've not been there but he felt maybe not enough quality for a pug crawl

Coventry would need a lot of planning, admittedly the 5 city centre GBG pubs are quite close together but the Twisted Barrel Brewery Tap is out to the east of the city centre, while the Broomfield Tavern and Hearsall Inn are to the west. After visiting those two Earlsdon is walkable to the southwest and has two GBG listed and an interesting micro and is not too far back to the station. So 11 targets but the walking route would need calculating in terms of time, maybe someone could give it a go ?

Sadly the excellent canalside Greyhound is just too far out of town to the north beyond the Ricoh and M6, with the Byatts Brewhouse Bar on the way north but too far to walk from the city centre.

There's a bus 170a from the station (once an hour, at 55) to near the farthest point of the Brampton Mile, with a very short walk from the stop to the first GBG pub: Rose & Crown. There are then three more GBG pubs on Chatsworth Road: the Tap (opens at 2pm Fridays), the Anchor (opens 3pm) and the Tramway, with a few worthy wild cards in case those late openers can't be persuaded.

There is then still a walk of almost a mile to the Chesterfield Arms, the best pub in Chesterfield in my opinion, but the Chesterfield Alehouse and the Market are also GBG and are on the way there. Nearby the Neptune is pretty decent, and then a little walk to near the football ground, the Glassworks and the Beer Parlour (opens 4pm), the last two GBG pubs in the town. This is a decent way out, but the total walk of three miles exactly would have plenty of pub stops. There are buses from near the Neptune to the football ground if the walk along the busy A61 is too much, and there are buses back into the centre with a short walk to the station.

The Portland, the Spoons near the market, must be close to getting into the GBG, and possibly the Rutland next to the church, and maybe the Pig & Pump too.

The new facility on Camra Experience makes it very quick to initiate a trip, but their mapping facility is not yet up to giving a route between the map points generated. (I've got 10 map points rather than nine. Not sure which of the two distant ones you didn't include - Plough (west) or Doctors Orders (north).)

Here's the Coventry trip - just open the link and then click on "open map" once you get through to Camra Experience. I agree that Byatts and the Greyhound look a bit too far out, but there are nine pubs fairly centrally placed.

Very good Will, a handy tool by the looks of it.
