I only have very incomplete information. Mostly, for the early war years.

It may well be that there is no accurate information for the final chaotic months of the war. When people had lots of other things to worry about. And brewing statistics weren't much of a priority. If brewing was taking place at all.

That's why I was so happy to find these numbers for brewing in Berlin in 1944.

I'm fairly gobsmacked at the total quantity produced: almost 4 million hl. Though that does include drinks other than beer. And I imagine that most of the beer was so weak as to be barely recognisable as beer.

There are 21 breweries in total. Of which, 11 were in East Berlin. Interesting, that. As West Berlin was double the size of East Berlin. However, the two largest breweries, Kindl Neuköln and Schulthess Kreuzberg, were both in the West.

Several companies operated multiple breweries: Schulthess 6, Engelhardt 3, Kindl 2 and Löwenbrauerei 2. With these spread across the East and West sections of the city. Which made things complicated. In the 1980s, there were beers branded Schultheiss and Kindl in both the East and West. Using exactly the same logos, even though they were completely separate enterprises.
By the end of the decade, they were making rather less. As Mild rapidly fell out of favour in London.

It’s a fairly typical Mild of the period, being dark and pretty watery. The grist is quite simple, just mild and crystal malt along with some flaked maize and sugar. At least, I think it’s flaked maize. It just says “flakes” in the brewing record. In the 1980s and 1990s, that was flaked torrefied barley. I’m guessing that in these earlier records, it means the more usual flaked maize.

There were two types of sugar: No. 3 invert and CDM (Caramelised Dextro-Maltose). For the latter, I’ve substituted straight caramel. Which should be close enough. Unless, by some miracle, you can get hold of real CDM.

Two types of English hops, one from the 1958 harvest and one from 1959.
April 2026. Sheffield. A Saturday in Sheffield before, we hoped, a last hurrah cleaning the old house in Waterbeach. I did a walk out over the hills to the Botanical Gardens, where I brought Dad 5 years ago on his only visit to Sheffield. He’d given up golf the previous years and was struggling to… Continue reading BASS IN THE*BOTANICAL
April 2026. Sheffield. Some good news today. Sunnyside is finally sold, to a lovely couple with two toddlers. Mum would be delighted. A week ago I was waiting for something to go wrong with exchange/completion/WW3, and persuading Mrs RM to get out of the house on a Friday night for some exercise, but definitely no… Continue reading AN UNUSUAL EXCUSE FOR A DIVERSION TO A*PUB
I say final because Alta ended up being our last port of call, even though that honour should have gone to Narvik. Unfortunately, the weather took a turn for the worst, after our ship departed from Alta, with the captain warning us of a number of deep depressions developing off the coast of Norway. This was a pity, as Narvik represented the final Norwegian coastal settlement, of any size, that we haven't visited during our two cruises to this part of Scandinavia.

Alta is considered the northernmost city in the world with a population surpassing 10,000. It is a functional town made up of several communities strung together along the E6 highway, but also serves as a centre of transportation in Finnmark county. The town's port facilities are situated along Altafjorden, just alongside Alta Airport, where there are direct flights to Oslo and certain other cities in Norway like Tromsø. Our ship was berthed close to the end of the runway, which gave us a good view of the planes landing, and taking off, even though there weren't that many flights in and out of the airport.

During the German occupation of Norway during World War II, Alta was a key strategic location for the Nazi forces. The battleship Tirpitz was based in the Altafjord for two years and served as one of the main threats against convoys delivering supplies from Western Allies to the Soviet Union. The area around Alta held the Nazi’s largest naval base outside of Germany during World War II.

Alta was devastated at the end of the conflict, as the Nazis instituted as scorched earth policy in the wake of their retreat. The Germans felt pressure from an alliance between Finland and Russia and initiated a forced evacuation of the local people around Alta. About 45,000 people were forcibly relocated to the Tromsø area, and before they left, the occupying forces destroyed almost everything including buildings, infrastructure, mines and wells.

Modern day Alta has risen from the ashes of war, and now boasts a well-laid out town centre, that incorporates an extensive and modern shopping centre, and one that isn't dominated by multi-national retailers. I visited on both days of our stop-over in Alta, and whilst not normally a fan of shopping arcades, was impressed with what I saw. In the absence of much else, Alta's modern and well-laid out shopping centre, seemed to act as a magnet for the local populace, by drawing in people from all walks of life.

There was also a number of cafes and bars - more about the latter, later, but if you live in an area that is perpetually dark for one part of the year, and then a location that remains light, for part of the summer, I imagine you will crave company and seek the comfort that goes with your fellow human beings - or some of them, perhaps!

Somewhat disappointedly, the weather was a good 10-15 degrees warmer than it should have been for late March, which meant that much of the snow had started to melt, something that was even more noticeable on the second day of our visit. This was quite noticeable, when I stepped down from the shuttle bus, and was saved from landing flat on my back, by a burly, local tour guide! Despite the slippery conditions underfoot, I made it across to Alta's ultra-modern place of worship. Known as Northern Lights Cathedral, this impressive church was consecrated on 10th February 2013. As well as a significant local landmark, the cathedral is visible from many parts of the city.

Apart from the shops, the cathedral, the bars, and the stunning scenery, there’s not a great deal in Alta to keep visitors occupied beyond a one-day stay, unless you’re a history buff, of course. So why, in common with other visiting cruise ships, stay for two day? The consensus seems to be, this is down to the large number of excursions available to passengers, most of which include outdoor, winter activities, such as dog sledding, or being pulled through the snow by horse-driven sleighs.

One such activity that I took part in, was a visit to the Holmen Husky Lodge, situated to the south of the city. The centre offers husky-pulled sled rides by day and accommodation in purpose-built glamping tepees, by night. I visited Holmen, not so much to see the huskies, but more so because I thought that the location of the lodge, away from the lights of the city centre, would offer the best chance of witnessing the famous, but elusive, Northern Lights.

I was right too, as towards the end of a talk about the dogs, and their work, we were hurriedly called away from the warmth of the large tepee, we were sitting in, and out into the cold, dark night, to see the Aurora Borealis in all its glory! And the lights were certainly glorious, and well worth travelling to the far northern reaches of the globe, to have the chance of seeing them. What started as just a faint glow, soon sprang into life, and we were treated to a spectacular display of heavenly illuminations.

The following evening, as our ship was preparing to set sail, we witnessed a further display, from the observation deck of our cruise liner. This time, Mrs PBT's was able to see the lights for herself and thus didn't feel cheated after missing them the previous night. Still to come, a few Norwegian beers enjoyed in a couple of far northern bars, plus some final observations on this wild and rugged part of northern Europe.
I’m suddenly miles behind on the blog again. How has that even happened ? April 2026. Birmingham. I’d just had the overdue glass of water on my Curated Exploration of Public Houses (CEPH), but forgotten to eat. Across the road from The Wolf, Mr Tasty offered artisanal pizza (possibly), but you’ll know how seriously I… Continue reading HIGH (NBSS SCORES)*SOCIETY
Today it's more of the same, except the brewery is Denver's Crooked Stave.

Again, we begin with a hazy pale lager, although rather than "Kellerbier", the brewery has called it their Italian Pils. This is a light 4.9% ABV and smells ripely fruity, of soft peach and mango. The flavour is calmer, and rather more pils-typical, with a crisp pale malt base, adorned by citric hops which add a modest amount of bitterness but lots of lemon and grapefruit flavour. The unfiltered fuzz adds a softness of texture, meaning it's both crisp and smooth; thirst-quenching and filling, in a way I associate most with Bavarian Helles. Some may argue that the hopping makes it too American to be classed with any kind of European pilsner, but I think that's par for the course when the "Italian" card is played: "Italian pils" should never be confused with "pils from Italy". This is a highly enjoyable lager, and debates on whether it gets filed with new-world or old-world examples are entirely immaterial.

Next it's an amber lager called Road Trippin', and I trust Crooked Stave to deliver what I want from one of these (hops). It doesn't look the best, pouring a dirty brownish ochre, and there was no hop brightness from the aroma, only a bittersweet liquorice effect. The flavour turned out to be almost as dirty as the beer looked; a mélange of strawberry and raspberry mush, blowtorched with dry roast and infused with dreggy grit. There's a poke of hop bitterness too, but it's quite old-world, suggesting earthy English varieties to me, though that could just be Cascade showing its Fuggle ancestry. It is not what I wanted. The best American amber ales have a precision about them, displaying citric hops and caramel malt separately, but in a complementary way. In this one, everything is rough and indistinct. Of course, leaving a beer unfiltered can prevent any beneficial flavours from being stripped out, but there's no point going this way if all that's left behind is dregs. This is a beer in serious need of polish and focus.

A sour beer finishes this set, hopefully with a flourish. This is Hibiscus Dream, made with both hibiscus and blueberry, and is a beautifully bright cherry red in the glass. The aroma is extremely promising, suggesting a mix of sourness and fruit of the sort one gets with grape or berry geuze. Like a geuze, it's busily fizzy and light-bodied: to be expected for 4.5% ABV and fully fermented out. Not a trace of sugary fruit (or flower) additive remains. Where the geuze analogy ends is its lack of barrel-ageing, meaning no oak spicing or wine notes. So it's simpler, but still very good. The cherry and raspberry flavours are bright, clean and distinct, and while there's little by way of aftertaste, it finishes with a mildly farmy wild-yeast funk: a tasty square of stinky and runny cheese next to the fruit compote. In a world of non-sour sour fruit beers, here's one that shows how it ought to be done. Shove yer lactose.

It seems that the wild and sour end is where Crooked Stave excels, and I'm not at all surprised. I'm sure it's good for the brewers to try their hand at other things, and nobody wants a monoculture, but there's only one type of beer for which I can recommend this brewery to you.
I’ll spare you the A-ha video. April 2026. Hockley. Birmingham. At Bournville station I caught up again with the two Wolves fans from Attic, and had a chat about the merits of the Great Western vs the Wheatsheaf, and the mysterious “ruin” pubs of Budapest. Birmingham hasn’t quite got into ruin pubs yet, the original… Continue reading CRY WOLF

Shut up about Barclay Perkins - Beer in the DDR (part 7)

More individual DDR beer...

Visit the Shut up about Barclay Perkins site

More individual DDR beer styles.

What I like about the standards for DDR beers is that they are so specific that you could easily brew beers based on them. Also using the rules on ingredients, for example, on the malt percentages, and hop types and quantities. It's a dream of mine to have a DDR beer festival, with examples of all the different styles. Oddly, no-one seems that keen on brewing these beers. Which is a shame. Get in touch if you fancy giving any of these styles a try.

Getting back to the slides, Märzen is another style which exists in the standards documents and for which I have labels, but which seemed to be extremely rare. I certainly never came across it. Which is a shame, as it sounds like an interesting beer. Strangely, it was unfiltered, but pasteurised. And only came in bottles.

Extra is another odd one. A sort of Schankbier version of Helles. It's another type that I can't remember ever seeing. And one which didn't have an equivalent in the West.

Weizenbier was so rare that I don't even have a label for it. Meaning I don't even have an idea of which breweries might have brewed it. The OG was a bit lower than in the West, where Weizen was usually over 12º Plato.

Lichtenhainer was a local style, only found around Jena in Thüringen. It was so obscure, that it doesn't even show up in the standards documents. It died out in the early 1980s.

Gose is brewed all over the place now. It was only brewed sporadically in the DDR, disappearing between 1966 and 1985. In its brief revival in the late 1980s, it was brewed at the Berliner Weisse brewery. Presumably because they were experienced in sour beer production. I spent years trying to track it down in the 1990s. Now every fucker makes one.

What was DDR beer like? Much better than its reputation. There were some excellent beers brewed. Sure, there were some crap ones. But that's true everywhere. I've been sticking up for it for the last 30-odd years. Many of those slagging DDR beer off never really drank any of it.

The Berliner Weisse was better than any of the West Berlin versions. Many of the Pilsators were excellent. As good as the Pale Lagers brewed in Czechoslovakia. Those form Mühlhausen and Sternquell were particularly good. And the standard Pilsners of Berlin were pretty decent.

The Gothaer beers were shit, mind.
This is the end of the presentation. Feel free to ask questions in the comments.
I know it’s an Aerosmith tune, but I played the R.E.M. version a lot, so… April 2026. Stirchley. Birmingham.
