March 2026. Tuxford. Nottinghamshire. Mr Protz wrote the definitive book about the pubs along the Great North Road, but there’s far less of them than you’d hope if you had to make the trek up and down the A1 weekly. I took the sliproad to Tuxford (pop, now 2,809) as I fancied artisanal panini rather… Continue reading “It’s a John Smiths Smooth pub”. March 2026. Sheffield. Back from Driffield in triumph, East Yorkshire GBG complete, I find Mrs RM in full-on “Operation Yank Invasion” mode, with a list of jobs to make the house ready for Chicago guests (not Dick and Barb) last weekend. Saturday night had been earmarked for a Curated Exploration of Kelham Island Public Houses,… Continue reading CHECKING OUT KELHAM IN ADVANCE OF THE AMERICAN*INVASION
It is a handsome free house, and we've been a few times and like it. If you want to know a bit more about it, I suggest you read this piece from the Southwark News which lays out the story of the pub's resurrection in excellent detail. The pub itself is handsome, well laid out inside and the staff in my experience are helpful. Glasses are oversized ensuring a full pint and the cask beer is well-chosen, and by and large has been in very good condition when we've visited. Perhaps it is the times we've chosen, but it hasn't been very busy when we call in, but us being a bit older (ahem) it tends to be during the day. They are however extending it by opening a room downstairs, so hopefully it is doing fine. One observation is that twice we've called in winter and both times the pub has been pretty cold. Maybe that's a money saving exercise, but it doesn't really do it for me. I expect to be warm in the pub.
Bermondsey has its share of interesting pubs, and we are still coming to grips with them. It takes us about half an hour or forty-five minutes to walk to most parts of it, so we can get a bit of exercise too, which is good. This we did a couple of Sundays ago, and it gave us the chance to check out another pub we'd heard of - Simon the Tanner. Its website describes itself as a "dinky destination for quality and relaxed vibes in Borough, Bermondsey and London Bridge." Well, it can't really be in all three, but I can see what they are driving at. CAMRA's review of it is slightly more down to earth "In a quiet road off busy Bermondsey Street, the Simon is a mid-terrace, modestly sized Grade II-listed pub. A former Shepherd Neame outlet, it is now a free house. The three regularly changing real ales are from small breweries, and there is sometimes also real cider."
It was around four o'clock when we popped in and the place was fairly quiet. The welcome was friendly, and I was offered tasters of the cask beers on offer, before settling on that rarest of beasts, a cask dark mild. On a fairly cold winter's day the pub was warm and cosy, though surprisingly empty given that Sunday lunches were available. Nonetheless, I liked it and I think we'll certainly be back which is recommendation enough when you think about it.
Leaving the pub, we headed back across Tower Bridge and one of our local pubs, the Sir Sydney Smith in Dock Street. This is a smashing little ex Truman's pub with a good mixed clientele. We remember the pub when we first hung about the place twenty odd years ago. Then you could have filmed Goodnight Sweetheart's pub scenes without changing much at all. It has since been sensitively modernised, but retains a very cosy and friendly feel with three cask beers. It, too, was pretty quiet, so perhaps the busyness of London pubs just doesn't extend to Sunday afternoons and early evenings? Given that quietness, I skipped the Harvey's Best and we finished our weekend with imported Bavarian Helles in the shape of Hofmeister, which was no hardship.
So there you have it. Three free houses, all with different approaches and all worth visiting. I'll take that. You should too if you are in the area.
All are good bets for decent cask ale too which is always something to look for. The Sir Sydney Smith isn't at all far from Tower Hill Tube. I don't think other than snacks you can eat at the hand and Marigold, but you certainly can at the other two.
There are plenty of other decent pubs near these pubs too, which is always worth bearing in mind.

I took six of them, judiciously deciding that I didn't need their hazy IPA.

First and lowest-strength is Nightshift, a Czech-style dark lager. There's rarely anything to dislike in these. It looks well: the appropriate shade of cola-brown or dark garnet with a decent off-white head. The aroma says rich and wholesome, with elements of malt loaf, burnt toast and dark, viscous treacle. That made it surprising that's it's relatively light of body at 5% ABV, and very drinkable. 440ml is too small a measure for this, which does a very good job, I thought, of replicating a sessionable sort of dark lager, designed for venues where a multiplicity of beer styles is not part of the offer. That said, it's also far from bland, delivering a beautiful combination of earthy, savoury umami, lighter caramel and a decent poke of Mitteleuropa herb-and-grass hop bitterness. Full marks for style fidelity, then, which also means it's a very tasty beer. I can't think of anything I'd change.

Two West Coast IPAs follow, beginning on Hyperion, at 6.5% ABV. I requested no haze but the haze has found me: this is murky, though at least amber rather than yellow, and with a very handsome layer of loose bubbles. For hops it uses Galaxy, Amarillo and Centennial, which I associate with orangey citrus flavours, and this does have a significant sharp and pithy quality in the flavour. It's not clean, though: the murk makes itself felt in a fuzzy texture and a rough dregginess. It's not unpleasant, but it lacks polish and poise. The bitterness is also a little lower than I would have liked; we do not progress beyond pith into pine. Its aroma does much the same as its flavour, though adding a little spice to the fruit effect, presumably from the suspended lees. I had Bådin tagged as a brewery that pays attention to style fidelity, but I don't think they've managed west coast IPA proper with this one, and its raw roughness means it wasn't as enjoyable as I'd hoped.

Their second chance is Swim, a collaboration with Outer Range. The ABV goes up to 7% and the mist clears a little, but it's still an unacceptably cloudy orange for something calling itself west coast. The aroma is juicy, dammit, which is lovely, but off-style. The flavour is plainer, however, deriving from Krush, Centennial, Simcoe and Citra. I'm guessing the Krush is responsible for that juice thing, which manifests in the flavour as mandarin segments. There's something a bit off behind that: burnt rubber or plastic, and I'm blaming those dregs. Again the bitter side is low and it just doesn't zing the way west coast should zing. I got the impression that maybe IPA isn't Bådin's forte.

Hold on, what's this? Three beers in, I discover that while I definitely left one hazy IPA behind, I accidentally took a different hazy IPA. This hazy IPA is called Hazy IPA, which makes the mistake even more egregious. Making the best of it, I note that it's not all that hazy, and the bright translucent orange colour does make it more attractive than the two IPAs which went before. The aroma is extremely juicy, like real satsuma spritz and tangerine flesh, bordering on Fanta-grade sweetness. The carbonation is low and the texture quite weighty, which doesn't go well with the sweet flavour. While it doesn't taste any way dreggy, there's a candy-chew and undiluted squash character to it. The density and intensity are more than I would have expected for 6% ABV. Still, for all the fruit sugar, it's clean, and relatively inoffensive. I see that Nelson Sauvin and Motueka hops are included in the recipe but I didn't pick up any of their distinctive features, which is a shame. Overall, it's not a bad effort, and I retract my previous catty remark about Bådin and IPA. When they're meant to be hazy, the result is passable.

We're back on track with a stout next, similarly simplistically named, as Bådin Stout. Though a full 7% ABV, it looked a little thin on pouring, and is red-brown in the glass, rather than black, with a fast-fading head. The aroma is sweet, with lots of caramel plus an aniseed-candy herbal side. It's not thin, I'm happy to say, but it doesn't quite reach the realm of creaminess, and I wouldn't have guessed it's as strong as it is. The flavour is plain. Chocolate forms the centre and then doesn't go anywhere especially interesting from there. There's a little buttery toffee and a slightly acrid smoky side. Some coffee roast would have been nice; likewise proper hop bittering to take the edge off all the sugar, but neither materialises. Sure, this qualifies as a stout, but it's not a great one. Strong and dark doesn't have to mean sweet.

I guess if you want coffee, you have to ask for it. It's an ingredient in The French Dispatch, a 10% ABV imperial stout created in collaboration with French brewery Prizm. There's vanilla too, so I was expecting another very sweet job, but got a pleasant surprise. The aroma doesn't give much away, showing a little chocolate sauce or caramel, but nothing especially distinctive. The flavour, however, makes excellent use of the coffee, bringing all the complementary oily, roasty fun which matches well with the toasted grain and caramelised sugar. The vanilla is restrained, for once. I would normally expect a big hit of milk chocolate due to its effect, but here it's all the high-cocoa dark sort, which is much classier. There's an excellent balance to this, keeping sweetness, booze, and the novelty gimmick factor in check, while still being sumptuous and satisfying: perfect as a dessert beer.

Don't trust Bådin with west coast IPA seems to be the takeaway lesson from these six cans. I'm sneakily happy that I made a mistake and inadvertently bought one of the hazy IPAs, because it helped make sense of those other two. Overall, the brewery seems to know what it's doing, which is very much normal for Norway, in my experience.

Visit the Shut up about Barclay Perkins site

I rise at 8:30. Potter around a bit, then nip downstairs for breakfast.

It's not a bad buffet. I go for bacon and scrambled egg. Followed by fruit. I'm such a healthy chap.

I wander to the supermarket to stock up on essentials: salami and cachaca. Two litres. I'll be needing that in Uberlandia. And am not quite sure where I could pick up some there. Or when I’ll have the chance. It’s not exactly the best stuff. Far from it. Not a cachaca you’d want to drink straight.

The weather isn’t great. It’s cloudy and threatening to rain. Not really beach weather. And only around 25º C.

I laze around in my room for a while. I'm in no rush. Around 13:30 grab an Uber and head for Copacabana and Colarinho. A bar that I rather like.

We roll through leafy Ipanema streets. Bustling businesses and apartment blocks. Chemists. So many chemists. Almost as many as in Paris.
I always try to drop by Colarinho when I’m in Rio. Grabbing a table outside. Where I’ve a good view of the street. There aren’t quite as many beautiful people walking past as usual. Though some still wander by in beachwear.

What to start with? I think I’ll go for an IPA.

Colarinho IPA Maracuja, 7.5%, R$23.90
A bit hazy, but not too bad. Quite nicely fruity and not too bitter. Quite dank and quite alcoholic. Just like me (I keep making that joke.)

They’re still building opposite. How long have they been doing that? At least a couple of years. I doesn’t seem to have progressed at all since I was here with the kids in 2024.

This is my only real rest day. I did consider going to the beach. Then I saw what the weather was like. I don’t really fancy sitting on the sand in the rain.

I first came here with Martyn Cornell in 2020. On my first trip to Brazil. I’ve visited pretty much every time I’ve been in Rio since. It reminds me of Martyn, which brings up mixed emotions. Still hard to believe that he’s been gone almost a year.

Time for another beer. Maybe an IPA, for a change?

Noi Amara IPA, 10.5% ABV, 100 IBU, R$30.90 (450 ml)
Pretty sure I’ve had this before. I wonder what attracted me to it? I remember: the high ABV. Funny that. It’s quite dark and caramelly. Also, pretty bitter. As you’d expect from the name.

Not bad. And very alcoholic. Did I mention that? Probably not. I don’t pay much attention to that sort of thing.

It’s not that warm. Did I already mention that, too? Barely warm enough to wear shorts. Which I’m obviously wearing. As I will be all the time I’m in Brazil.

The bloke on the next table is getting stuck into caipirinhas. He’s knocked back three or four since I’ve been here. I’ll be moving onto them later.

I’m feeling all relaxed now. Can’t think why. I just ordered a 57 real steak. Bargain. I don’t get anything to go with it. It’s a 100% meat meal.

A woman just walked past wearing a Nottingham Forest shirt. How strange. Most people are in Flamengo tops.

The steak is excellent. As they always are in Brazil. The beef is so good here. Just a shame about all the rainforest. Time for a caipirinha now. My first of the trip. I’m sure it won’t be my last.

You know what a caipirinha puts me in the mood for? Another caipirinha. Which is what I order. This is my idea of fun. Sitting in a Rio bar, drinking caipirinhas and with absolutely fuck all I need to do.

Still a bit hungry, I order a cod ball. Because I know from previous visits how nice they are. Full of coddy goodness. It doesn’t disappoint.

A French family, on their way back from the beach, order takeaway hamburgers. The adults drinking a Pils while they wait for their order.

I leave around 17:30. Before it gets dark. And when I’ve had enough caipirinhas to warm me up. I have nothing planned for the evening. Other than attacking my hotel whisky and fiddling on my laptop.
I find that the maid has left the TV on. A bit odd. As there must be a reason, I don’t switch it off.

I turn in around 23:00. As I have to be up fairly early tomorrow for my flight. After I’m urged unconscious by whisky.
March 2026. Beverley. Well, this may prove to be a completely pointless post, attempting to describe the magic of a Sam Smiths pub without pictures.

Visit the Shut up about Barclay Perkins site

I've fairly early start. my flight is at 10:40. I rise at 6:45. And am in an Uber by 8:05.

The formalities go pretty fast tanks to pushing in boarding. And after a quick diversion to the duty free, I'm in the lounge by 8:30.

It's the standard brace of whiskies to kick off. Along with some breakfast. It's the best meal of the day in the lounge. The hash browns are pretty nice. Not so keen on the turkey bacon. I prefer the real stuff. Which is full of piggy goodness.

For some reason, I thought the scrambled egg was potato salad on my first visit to the food bar. WTF was I thinking? Next time I get myself a plain omelette. And insert some cheese. Cheese improves anything.

I revisit the bar bar a couple of times for more restorative whiskies. Wouldn’t want to be getting on the plane too sober.

There's no air bridge, for some reason. We have to get a bus. Which is weird for such a large jet. And lots of stairs to walk up. Always a challenge for fat oldies like me.

Boarding is competed pretty early. I’m hoping to get two free seats next to me. But right, just before the doors close, two young blokes take the seats. They're obviously on stand-by. And, judging by the way they interact with the cabin crew, seem to be KLM employees. Probably cabin crew themselves.

That's fucked me trying to surreptitiously drink the miniatures I bought in the duty free. Then, just before take-off, they're moved to premium economy. Phew.

Just before take-off, we're told that there will be a half hour delay due to a "miscommunication". Great. It's more like 40 minutes. Brilliant. Though the pilot claims we'll still arrive on time. I’ll believe that when it happens.

The first meal is meatballs. It's just about edible. Though I can't stomach the mash. It’s good to have low expectations of airplane meals.

I start watching Infinite Vice. Which is sort of like the Big Lebowski. But not quite as good. Half way through, I pause it and doze for a couple of hours. It makes the time go quicker.

I nip to the galley a couple of times to fetch some red wine. I wouldn't want to become dehydrated during the flight, would I?

It's a long walk to immigration again. At least there are moving walkways for most of it. With my oldie priority, I'm through in a jiffy.

My bag pops out quickly. And soon I'm in a taxi bouncing towards Ipanema. Through a darkened Rio, lights glistening on the hillsides. Motorbikes weave scarily through the traffic. We dash through floodlit tunnels. Finally, rumbling into the rumbaing streets of Ipanema. Where shops glow enticingly. Cafés and bars spilling joyously onto the pavement.

God, I love Rio. Especially Ipanema. That could explain why I come here so often.

Same hotel as always. Comfortable enough rooms. Great location. Pretty decent buffet breakfast, which includes bacon. Crispy bacon. Mmmm.

Once checked in, I nip to the supermarket. It isn’t even a block away. (See what I said about the hotel’s location?) For bread rolls, cheese, sliced meat and cola. The latter to mix with my whisky. That’ll be my tea. The rolls and stuff, not the whisky. That’s supper.

The meat section is impressive. Big chunks of lovely beef. I stare longingly at the display for a while. Before moving on to the cheese. A far less impressive display. I’ve been spoilt by living in Holland.

I consider dropping by Mad Brew for a beer or two. Just consider. I don’t actually do it. As it’s getting late. And the pubs are looking pretty crowded. With happy, young people. Pretty much the opposite of me. I don’t want to bring down the tone.

I spend the next couple of hours watching YouTube. And sipping my whisky. Until sleep beckons me from across the void. Hello oblivion.

That voyage was made onboard Cunard Queen Mary 2 and included two visitsto Hamburg – one on the outward sailing, and the other on the return journey. The reasoning behind this was one of simple economics, because by making twocalls to Hamburg, was to pick up and then drop off parties of rich Germanpassengers eager to combine a visit to the fjords with a trans-Atlantic crossingto New York.

On that voyage, Alesund was the most northerly settlementthat we called at, whereas on the forthcoming one, this attractive Norwegian townwill be the most southerly port. So, apart from Alesund, all other anchorages onthis cruise will be new destinations as far as Mrs PBT’s and I are concerned. And this is where we must say farewell to Norway for thetime being, apart from revealing that the photos used to illustrate this post, datefrom that 2022 cruise to Norway.

Leaving the delightful Wilton's Music Hall, we set off along Cable Street towards Commercial Road and our planned stop at the Clement Attlee in Limehouse.

The first part of the walk passes through a mix of housing, some old and some much newer. On the way we passed several long-closed pubs. First we passed the Crown and Dolphin, which had been a pub since 1850. It finally closed in 1992 after a fire and has since been converted into flats. It is also connected to a famous murder, but you can look this up should you be interested. Not far away stands the former Cable Street Inn, once a Meux house, now operating as a rather smart bed and breakfast. Just a few steps further along, the Ship has also made the transition to residential life and is now flats. It’s a slightly melancholy little stretch for pub spotters, but at least these buildings are still standing — which is more than can be said for many of their counterparts elsewhere in the East End.
On a cheerier note the Clement Atlee is not only still trading, but is thriving if that Saturday afternoon was anything to go by. Externally it looks fantastically old school, but inside it is much more modern. CAMRA describes it as "pleasant and inoffensive" which does sum it up. Operated by the Craft Beer Company, it offered four cask ales on this visit and a huge bank of 21 keg taps selling a variety of beers and lagers. Service was routine. No great welcome and our fellow customers were happily engrossed in their own business which is fair enough. My beer - a house beer from Kent Brewery was excellent, so I had two. E enjoyed Flensburger Pils. Again the stereotype of unfriendly Londoners was trumped when we were engaged by another couple and advised not to miss the nearby Old Ship though we would be too early for the Drag-Act Cabaret. Who could pass that kind of tip up? Not us for sure.
Set on a backstreet beside a pleasant square just off Commercial Road, the Old Ship is a classic street-corner local. There are still traces of its former Watney's ownership in the external signage giving it a slightly time-capsule feel. Inside it was absolutely packed, almost entirely with men in their fifties to seventies who, almost without exception, were enthusiastically knocking back pints of Foster’s. Clearly everyone knew everyone else. Nobody paid us much attention - but in a friendly, unbothered sort of way - and within minutes we felt part of the scene. We even found a seat in the bar area. The old-school barmaid gamely tried the handpump for Timothy Taylor’s Landlord, but without success. Clearly nobody had asked for it all afternoon. Following the Foster’s trend though was a step too far, so we settled on Camden Hells instead, which actually was pretty good.
On leaving we noticed the Queen's Head across the square, so being in that frame of mind we headed there. Alas on peering though the window, it was utterly empty, so we swerved it in favour of the Prince Regent which proved a good call. This is another corner street local. It wasn't that busy, but the landlord greeted us very warmly and a local, sitting at the bar immediately started chatting. We discussed football for a bit then got talking to two old boys seated by the door. On hearing my accent they immediately made it clear they were Still Game* lovers, and we spent ten or fifteen minutes recalling favourite bits of the show. It turned out they had gone to school together 40 odd years ago. One now lived in Derby and one in Kent, but they still meet up every month or so for a catch-up and pub crawl. A lovely tale and two very nice gents.
There was a cask beer on offer, Shep's Spitfire, but we settled on genuine Spanish lager from Victoria Malaga. A bonus was the offer of a discount, offered by the landlord showing us a board which read "Discount for Students or Over 65's.". " Do you qualify under either of these?" he asked with a grin. We stayed for two drinks at a bargain £8.78 for a pint and a half.
We headed back to Aldgate on the 15 bus. Very handy for us. It had been an interesting day out, and we learned that some great little boozers still lurkin the backstreets of the East End. More exploring is clearly required.
March 2026. Wansford. East Yorkshire. A mile south of delightful Driffield, our final Humberside + tick, and once again not a classic, but plenty good enough. Always best to leave your final East Yorkshire pub to Hull. Not much to say about Wansford (pop. 142), canal barge apart, but it is in the same parish… Continue reading EAST YORKSHIRE HAS*FALLEN
March 2026. Hornsea. East Yorkshire. Saturday at home in Sheffield means tearing at the leash to get out Sunday, despite, you know, weeds to pull and all that. Two hours later I’m in Hornsea for my penultimate East Yorkshire tick, which given there’s only three (3) newbies to begin with isn’t that impressive. Whereas Hornsea… Continue reading HORNSEA SPRINGS TO*LIFE

With an OG in the low 1050ºs, it fits nicely into the strongest category of beer in the last set of price controls from just after WW I. These were generally the strongest draught beers in London during the interwar period. And included most Stouts.

As you’ve probably guessed, this was parti-gyled with Porter. All the London brewers did that. The quantities of Porter being brewed by this point didn’t merit being single-gyle.

The presence of oats convinces me that there was a bottled version. Oatmeal Stout wasn’t usually a draught beer. Even though, in many cases, draught Stout also contained oats. Brewers just didn’t tell anyone.

Pretty sure this wasn’t aged to any great degree. Maybe a few weeks in trade casks.
