April 2026. London. I’d never been to the Museum of the Home at Hoxton Station (blue M at the red dot), not sure I’d ever heard of it. Standing proud in old almshouses on the A10 next to the famous Vietmamese cafés, close to the cultural melting pot of Hoxton Street. Worth coming just for… Continue reading WHERE’S GEFFRYE GONE?

Visit the Fuggled site

As I mentioned in a previous post, I am heading to the UK in a few weeks, mainly for work, but with a little personal time chucked in as well. While I own the fact that I am a terrible beer tourist, I really don't plan my trips around breweries or beer cultures I want to visit - rather I go places and just see what is around. A key part of my planning process then, and maybe I a sad bandit for this, is to use Google Maps to find places in the locations that I will be, and then check out their websites to see if it is likely to be the kind of place I want to visit.
It is almost exactly 15 years that I wrote a post called "Do Pubs Help Themselves?" in which I lamented the standard of many a boozer website. My biggest beef was that many pub websites go to great lengths to tell you about their wine list, their cocktail list, their food options, but almost nothing about what beers are actually on draft, which is just as true for a tied house as it would be for a free house. So you would like to think that in our increasingly online world, pubs would have upped their game then, right?
Errr.....wrong. Sadly.
Maybe it is a product of the parts of the UK that I will be visiting, the north of Scotland, and London, with a minor detour to Windsor when I first arrive. Let's start with the positives though, the Windsor & Eton Brewery website is really useful, and as a result of reading that, and watching the Tweedy Pubs video on Windsor and Eton, I made the decision to spend my several hours between flights in and out of Heathrow by going west instead of east. I really like that they have their draft list in the taproom readily available, and so they will definitely be on the list of places to hit. Admittedly I'll probably go to their tied house, The George, as well, but they don't keep an up to date list of beers on their own website.
Also on the good side is the site for The Two Brewers, again for actually having a beer list on their website, but extra kudos for having the price of a pint on the list as well. I imagine I will be popping in for a pint of London Pride at some point in my day then.
My biggest challenge though, and I am sure there are reasons for this, but with so many tied houses in the English part of my trip, it does get really frustrating when there is a shared platform with generic information, and almost universally no list of what is on cask in a given pub - this goes for chains like Wetherspoons as well. Yes, the many Fullers pubs in the city have elegant, beautifully designed websites, but again I can't find out which beers of the Fullers Brewery range are available, making it pot luck to stumble across less regularly seen beers (at least from what I have been told) such as London Porter. I don't want to single out Fullers, as I have seen the same with Shepherd Neame, Greene King, and Nicholsons, though several Young's pubs tend to have at least a list, and occasionally pricing as well.
In the spirit of sharing around the opprobrium, places in Inverness and further north don't fare much better when it comes to an absence of useful information for the drinkers among us.
So, in the fifteen years since I first broached this issue, we seem to have gone from generally crap to being something of a curate's egg, which is progress I guess. Surely I am not alone in wanting to get a sense of what is on tap before I visit a boozer, whether this side or that side of the Pond?

Performed by London rivals Truman and Whitbread. Who liked to keep a close eye on what other brewers were producing. In particular, the gravity.

It’s obviously not a complete list of Youngs beers. For a start, there’s no Special Bitter and no Burton Ale. Though it does include the relatively rare Celebration Ale (originally called Coronation Ale).

Having the prices included, allows us to see how much standard X Ale increased in price during the 1950s. Rising from 1 shilling (12d) a pint in 1950 to ½ (14d) in 1959. Which is fairly modest increase compared to what happened in the 1960s and 1970s.

Sticking with X Ale, the colour is a little on the pale side. With values of 60, 68 and 75. I would expect a London Dark Mild to be a minimum of 80.

Did they really brew two Stouts in the 1950s? I doubt it. I think they’ve just changed the strength and the name.

The good news? None of the draught samples seem to have been watered. As the Ogs in the analyses match those in the brewing records.

That’s all very well, but what was this beer sold as? It looks like a strong Burton Ale. Especially as it was parti-gyled with th3eir Mild Ale. Just like their standard Burton Ale, XXX. Given the strength, I’m guessing that this was a bottled beer. Was this later renamed Old Nick? Or was it already being sold as that?

Not a huge amount to discuss about the recipe. As it’s essentially the same all the other X Ales. This particular example being parti-gyled with X Ale.

The colour comes from a combination of sugar and quite a dark crystal malt. There are no roasted malts of any kind.

Guess what the hops were? One English type from the 1958 harvest and another from 1959. Exactly the same as in all the other beers.
April 2026. Royal Tunbridge Wells. An evening in a sunny Pantiles, mainly spent in the subterranean bar of the Mad Dog, and again we’d forgot to eat. I’m sure the Pantiles has many dining options, most outside our budget, so we headed back up the hill for a minute before Mrs RM dived into the… Continue reading A SIGN OF*SPRING
April 2026. Royal Tunbridge Wells. “Well, I’m back in Tunbridge Wells again” says Mrs RM as we re-enter the Pantiles, almost getting nostalgic for her childhood home again, much as I might almost get nostalgic for the Sun and Chung Hwa. Almost. I stopped by on a recent Friday afternoon to find it's all still there and going, though no longer thronged by the crowds from its early days. The good food and fresh beer all still feature, I'm happy to say.

The final outstanding beer from Priory Brewing's advertised relaunch line-up is Confession Bock. This proved very much on the dunkel end of the bock spectrum, a specification it meets with its dark garnet colour and 5.8% ABV. I'm ever wary of too much vegetal hop bitterness in bocks in general but this emphasises the caramel malt instead, almost to doppelbock levels, with an extra dose of invigorating coffee roast. The hops are present but restrained, bringing a mild tang of celery and damp lettuce, clearly signalling that authentic noble hops have been deployed. It's almost but not quite sticky, and well-balanced with properly integrated flavours, the way actual German breweries do it. Warming for a cold day yet light-bodied for a warm one, this is ideal spring drinking, and a welcome addition to the core range.

New on tap was Oktoberfest Kolsch [sic]. I don't know what demented committee process came up with this. As though the name wasn't incongruous enough, it's only 3.3% ABV. Huh? It does at least look like Kölsch, being a pure and clear pale golden. Not much happens in the aroma, but is that a soapy twang? The flavour confirms a slight detergent note. It might be from the glass, and normally covered up by the beer flavour, because there's really little else going on in here. It's not quite crisp, being a little flabby, but least it's not watery. There's maybe a hint of rustic grain husk or burlap, though I had to look hard to find it, and the soap twang was stronger. This is, at best, extremely bland. Far be it from me to say nobody wants to drink this sort of beer, but I don't see what they were trying to brew here. If it's simply to make a beer that's pale and low-strength, I'm sure there are better ways to go about it. I hope it has a short tenure and is replaced by something that's up to the usual Priory quality.

Maybe this demonstrates the wonderfully varied spectrum of brewing in the German vernacular. Priory at least provides plenty of choice in that direction.
Not that I'll necessarily pay any attention to them. An overwhelming vote might just tip my opinion over the edge.

I do my best to focus. If not, I'd be all over the place. Literally. In time and geography. That's the curse of being fascinated by all aspects of brewing everywhere. Sticking to the UK helps. Without being 100% effective.

After assembling a mass of material while putting a talk together, and seeing how little there was about beer in the VLB book on the DDR brewing industry, I'm extremely tempted to write a second book about East Germany. But who the hell is my expected audience? It's a bit of a niche topic.

Sometimes, you know, you stumble into writing a book. I do, at least. Quite often. It's an example of my ability to get side-tracked. Because I had lots of lovely fresh brewing records from Youngs, I published quite a few recipes. Then I had the interview with former Youngs brewer John Hatch. It just made sense to collect it into a book format where I wouldn't lose or forget about it. Currently 32,000 words, the manuscript.

My principal project is "Free!". UK beer 1880-1914. Another of the chapters from my Meisterwerk documenting UK beer from 1700 to 1973. I've been doing it in a random order. With these published so far:

1914-1920 Armistice!
1918-1939 Peace!
1939-1947 Blitzkrieg!
1946-1969 Austerity!
1970-1979 Keg!

Being totally honest here, I have a thing for late Victorian an Edwardian beer. And pubs. They still exist. The beer doesn't. And I wish it did. Publishing a shitload of recipes from the period will hopefully give me the chance to try a few beers from the Golden Age of UK brewing. As I've chosen to call it, based purely on my own prejudices.

411 recipes so far. Quite a few more to go.

Which of these three books would you like me to finish first? (DDR! vol. 2, Youngs!, Free!)

Let me know. Then I'll decide if you're right. Or not.
Choosing this particular operation wasn't quite a spur of the moment decision, but it was strongly influenced by Mrs PBT's and I looking for a holiday that would provide a welcome break between Christmas and Easter, a period where it seems as though winter is never going to disappear and spring is never going come along.

A voyage to the Norwegian Fjords seemed like a good idea, so we looked at cruises heading in that direction, with particular reference to our cruise-line of choice (up until that time at least), on Cunard. Unfortunately, the Cunard voyage to the Fjords that was our cruise of choice, was already fully booked - or at least with regard to the class of accommodation we wanted. That was when we decided to give Ambassador a try.

A couple who we'd met on a previous cruise, and who Eileen had kept in touch with, had given a glowing report on this cruise line, so with nothing to lose I picked up the phone, and managed to book a 16 night cruise to the Norwegian Fjords. We secured a good deal, largely due to an early booking, and for allowing the cruise line to allocate our room, whilst remaining within a certain band of cabins. What was even better, was Ambience sailing from Tilbury, a port that is just 45 minute's drive from home, as opposed to two hours, plus to Southampton - home port for the majority of the major cruise lines.

So, what are Ambassador like to sail with? Well, they're obviously different from the likes of Cunard, but as far as service and food is concerned, both Eileen and I enjoyed the experience. What was particularly refreshing was the absence of the snobbery that is sometimes quite evident on board Cunard. In addition rooms are referred to as cabins, rather than the pretentious "State Room" moniker, used by Cunard. The staff are friendly and hard working, a trait that applies to the vast majority of cruise ships.

We discovered that on Ambience, our room steward worked as a waiter in the buffet, for the evening shift. This meant there was no evening "Turn Down", as found on Cunard, where the top sheet, your already made-up bed, is turned down in readiness for you to slide into, and there are no chocolates laid out on your pillow. The latter touch, in particular, is an unnecessary extravagance, and one that the customer ultimately ends up paying for. Cunard are almost certainly thinking along the same lines, and are rumoured to be dropping this practice.

I personally think that the cabins on Ambience are laid out far better than those on Cunard ships, with what in effect is a "walk-in" wardrobe area, that separates the bathroom area from the rest of the room. In addition, thanks to strategically-sited magnets, the cabin doors can be held open, when necessary, thereby making any deliveries to the room, much easier. A small point, perhaps, but when you witness the waiting staff on Cunard, struggling to hold the spring-loaded doors open with their feet, or even their backsides, whilst manoeuvring into the room with a tray loaded with your morning breakfast, this simple little trick makes life a lot easier for all concerned.

I'm going to gloss over the onboard entertainment, as this applies equally to Ambassador as well as Cunard, but basically I've never been a fan of "West End" style shows. Mrs PBT's is rather more ambivalent towards such presentations, but as she has an irrational fear of contracting something nasty in a crowded theatre - and that applies to being on dry land, as well as at sea, she is unlikely to drag me off to one of these shows.

Lectures, and similar style presentations are a different beast, and we have both seen, and listened to some really good talks. Cunard have the edge over Ambassador, probably before they've got a lot more financial clout, and they also have the advantage of the talk/presentation being streamed, directly into passengers cabins. Guests can then either watch live, or play catch-up, at their leisure, later on. There is also live music, but many of the covers bands engaged to "entertain" passengers, leave much to be desired when it comes to raw talent.

Ambassador Cruise Line was established in 2021 by Christian Verhounig, who was the former CEO of Cruise & Maritime Voyages, a companywhich went into administration in 2020. But we'll be sailing on a smaller, and more personal ship, and a vessel that is more suited to berthing at some of the smaller ports around Britain and Ireland. Footnote: I received news today that our travel insurance will be compensating us financially, for being unable to call at Narvik, the port we missed on the last leg of our recent Norwegian cruise. Whilst we were obviously disappointed at missing our stop at this important town, with its memories from World War II of resistance by Norwegian and British forces, against the German invaders, the money received will help erase those five days of being buffeted by some of the stormiest seas we have encountered over the past six nautical years afloat.
April 2026. Royal Tunbridge Wells. Two nights in T’Wells as we tick parents and Americans (patience !) in quick order, and on a Schorchio ! day I get a chance to see posh Kent out enjoying pubs in the sun. Perhaps. Mrs RM has important things to do on her blog, so I leave her… Continue reading MAD DOGS AND ENGLISHMEN GO OUT IN THE TUNBRIDGE WELLS*SUN
April 2026. Royal Tunbridge Wells. I’m still driving down to see Dad every week, that smile is worth any journey, but now without the stress of checking on a house that had been “Sold Subject to Contract” for a year. We combined the trip to Waterbeach with one to Mrs RM’s parents in Kent, where… Continue reading A PROPER FULL ENGLISH IN ROYAL TUNBRIDGE*WELLS
