Besides, if you are away somewhere for the weekend in self-contained accommodation the sachets are much easier to nick.

point taken on the sachets v bottles / jars / pots issue - I just find the sachets awkward to open and often end up wearing some of the content. I have seen diners dip chips and even sausages in sauces and mustards rather than pouring sauce to plate - great for diners using the salted meat and potato grease in the jars later in the week / month to follow, especially vegetarians.

A friend had a summer job waiting in a French hotel. Breakfast was the usual basics. The jam came in huge tins, red stuff and yellow stuff, indistinguishable but for the colour, and was put out on the tables in dishes. Of course there was much cross-contamination as the morning progressed, was well as the addition of crumbs, bits of butter and heaven knows what else. When it was time to clear up, all the remaining jam, both red and yellow, was scraped back into the red tin on the basis that it was more difficult for the guests to tell what added extras might be present. Needless to say even thirty years on he only ever has the yellow stuff when staying in such establishments.

Similarlly a pub I used to use years ago put all the slops back into the dark mild.We used to laugh when customers commented on how good the mild was as we drank our Courage best. Not so funny when there was no mild on for a couple of weeks. We called it a pint of Charlie,s Russian roulette after the tight wad landlord.

This used to be a very common practise, I've seen lager slops go into a white bucket and beer slops into a red one in managed Mac's houses just under twenty years ago. Around about the same time Young's had the embarrasment of the revelation that funnels and filter papers got delivered to their pubs. Wetherspoon's to their credit, outlawed it.
I've no idea if it still goes on, but if it does it's a false economy as if a beer tastes poor it won't get drunk!

There are many great pub outings I've been on, only to be hampered by a poor layout, flights of stairs and steps and no wheelchair access. Not great when trying to escort elderly and infirm relatives around.

Pah! Some people are just too busy drinking pop, and organising fly-bys, to focus on the oblivion game!
