I wouldn't lose too much sleep over a pub that has closed simply due to the smoking ban. Beer range and quality, friendliness, efficient running, cleanliness, atmosphere all make a pub. A smoky atmosphere doesn't.

I think maybe barfly was making the point that it is not worth worrying about a pub that has only closed because of the smoking ban.

I doubt there will be many pubs that were hugely successful before July 1st and were then suddenly ruined because the smokers vanished. Sadly there are just lots of pubs closing these days and sure the smoking ban may prove to be a factor in some of them.

There are headlines appearing in the press like Smoking ban prompts landlords to quit but when you read the comments from the landlady and landlord you realise that the smoking ban is just the final straw for some pubs.

Personally I think in a couple of years time we may find there are more people going to pubs now that they aren't smokey, sadly that change will take time.

    Well I am a non-smoking zealot I must admit.

I would love to publish a list of pubs that have closed due to the smoking ban, and for any other reason, as we have already commented on the site it is a tragedy how many pubs are closing and they don't need lack of smokers as an excuse.

Similarly it would be nice to have any new pubs that are opening as occasionally still happens, sadly we just don't have access to that sort of information.

We have had one user posting who is clearly a pub owner maybe some of the other users who we see using the site to promote their pubs would like to post some of their experiences, it would be fantastic if they want to get involved in this.

The town where I grew up has lost three pubs this year, all of them are becoming flats.
Another town nearby has also lost three pubs.
These are places where there has always been a thriving pub community.
I'm sure the ban's affecting business.

Below are links to stories about the pub closures from the local press.

Quite agree, Sadly miss a pub if it closes, but would be good if everybody put their local pub on the site with a list of ales on sale and less mention of food after all a pubs priority is beer . A pub serves drink with food.A restaurant serves food with a drink.Keep this in mind when putting details on the site, that way i might get to know what ales are on offer, saves more time to get to the pub and less time on computer

Four pubs have closed in my area in the last month "Due to the smoking ban"????? don't think so as the pubs were not very good in the first place and the anti smoking law was the last straw for the ailing pubs..I have just converted a large sports shop into a brand new build Freehouse bar .I am a smoker and find it no problem as I wouldn't smoke behind the jump anyway..
The quality of the service provided should compensate for any smoking problems.
