You can sometimes get cheaper fares by breaking the journey at Birmingham, rather than booking a through ticket.

I've managed to reduce my fare from £57.50 (Sheffield to Reading and return) to £43.20 by chunking it up into bits: Sheffield to Derby, Derby to Birmingham, Birmingham to Banbury, Banbury to Reading. (Two hours 46 minutes there, three hours 44 minutes back.) Still seems quite expensive...

Perhaps, then, it might be instructive to see if there are cheaper options for 'the South' - Bristol, Bath, Oxford...? Or we could shunt the date forward by a month to allow for advance tickets?

Southern will do you singles to/from Victoria/Brighton for £5, although these are Advances and tie you to a specific train - East Coast may well have similarly restrictive (albeit a little pricier) deals for Leeds/Kings Cross. In fact I see that they have - £22.15 each way for Saturday 13th.

Anyway, I'm tempted by a Reading trip (obviously Brighton's handy too).
