I knew AW had been ill, didn't realise he was that ill.
'And where he supped the past lived still. And where he sipped the glass brimmed full' John Barleycorn, Carol Ann Duffy.
Really shocking news.
My heart goes out to his family and friends.
I am a salmon !!
I have feared that this bad news was going to come along. I wish I could have actually met him as I'm sure we would have had a lot more in common than stupid and pointless arguments about what area a pub is in or even whether liking football is a good or bad thing. I do know we had one thing in common which was that Shipstone's were the top Nottingham brewer back in the day.
Blimey, I'm really sorry to hear that, and if Alan happens to read this I'm very sad that I never knowingly met you (although having visited many Shippos pubs, along with various Home Ales, Hardy & Hansons and Mansfield outlets in and around Nottingham in days gone by, I feel that our paths must have crossed at some stage).
Thinking of you and your family.
MILD:
That's awful news.
Alan, you've given us lot a huge schooling on rough boozers, dodgy northern mill towns and doing 24 pubs in a single crawl.
We won't see your like again. I hope you enjoy the rest of your time with us.
This is really upsetting news. I would like to say how much I have enjoyed looking at Alan's photos. He has created a wonderful historical record of pubs. I would like to send my best regards to him.
Such awful news about one of our more respected and sometimes controversial contributors.
Alan, if you read this, many thanks for all the information and opinions.
'Beer is for all day, not just for breakfast'.
Yes,very sad news.As someone posted on Twitter, the last of the real pubmen.
"At that moment I would have given a kingdom, not for champagne or hock and soda, or hot coffee but for a glass of beer" Marquess Curzon of Kedlestone, Viceroy of India.
