Sunderland + York
Hi all,
Got an overnight stay in Sunderland for a midweek match in March. I'll have a few hours in the afternoon so which shouldn't I miss?
Breaking my journey back at York the next day. I'll only have an hour or so to kill so looking for a couple of gems near the station?
Cheers,
Del.

The two best pubs within easy walk of the station are probably Brigantes and the Maltings. Unfortunately they're in opposite directions (see Google maps) so that 18 minutes of your "hour or so" will be taken up with walking.
Or you can just go to the York Tap on the station and do a three pub crawl without walking anywhere.

Thanks for the replies.
I will certainly try the York Tap and with luck I'll squeeze in Brigantes and the Micklegate. I wish I had longer in York but it is a long enough train journey as it is.
Sunderland is all new to me so I will do as many as I can there!

The best pub in Sunderland is actually in South Shields - The Steamboat
It's on the Metro - well-worth a trip.

Hey, a bit more on Sunderland. The Deptford area and the walk towards it is the place to be. Sadly, the characterful Saltgrass is currently closed due to a fire in December. But from the centre, a good crawl would be the Dun Cow (CAMRA National Inventory), Fitzgeralds, The Ship Isis(!), The Museum Vaults and the Kings Head. All lively traditional Northern boozers.
The Steamboat in South Shields is definitely worth a shout, but the metro journey is about 45 minutes and involves a change at Pelaw, or that was the case last time I was there.

Thanks for that. I like the look of the Dun Cow along with the Peacock, Engine Room and Vesta tilleys as I am staying just round the corner. Might have to add the Museum Vaults and the Isis to my ever growing list!
