Saturdays in Birmingham must be all the rage, as I'll be there tomorrow and funnily enough, I've also got the Sack of Potatoes on my to do list. I'll let you know how I get on.

If I was about I would as I love doing locks. I've dragged a boat down the locks out of central B'ham just passed the Flapper down towards Bordesely once after my mates went for a kebab and took the boat keys with them... This was post midnight till about 5am so was perfect boating hours....
Hi all,
An overnight stay in Watford at the end of the month.
All suggestions welcome !!
Cheers,
Simon.
I am a salmon !!
Had a good day out in Brum in the end. The Sack of Potatoes was my first port of call and it sounds like it hasn't changed too much since your review. The beer range was maybe a little more mainstream - Landlord, Black Sheep Bitter, Salopian Shropshire Gold, Woods Pot O'Gold and Kelham Island Pale Rider with Oakham JHB about to come on. Beer was in good nick, the staff were friendly, the stained glass looked great in the sun and there was a 10% CAMRA discount. I don't think they'll have you walking the plank after a visit here.
Also tried Gosta Green, just over the road, but the beer was terrible. The new-ish The Botanist was very smart and had four interesting ales on - nice place to take the missus, but perhaps less so a bunch of drunken sailors. Really impressed with The Victoria and I also tried the new The Stable which served up a terrible pint of Oliver's Island but had over 80 different ciders, should you fancy a change. It goes without saying that the Craven Arms remains the best pub in the city.
Have a great time, wherever you end up.
Have you been to Berkhamsted? There's a reasonable Spoons, the famous Rising Sun and a newish Red Squirrel outlet / micropub. Unlike Hemel & Leighton Buzzard the town is fairly close to the station. and it's not very far from Watford so shouldn't cost a fortune for a Day Return. Alternatively there are several Spoons dotted around Metroland both on the Overground to Euston and the Metropolitan line. Berkhamsted is almost certainly best but go for a session rather than to tick every pub.
