Crazy!
If you could hack a 2-hr coach trip, there are £4e/w options available from Manchester at www.megabus.com
Whatever happened to that " traditional cry of old London Town" ,how did it go?
"Stop the bus, Stop the bus. We want a WEE WEE ".
On second thoughts it could get you thrown off a long way from home. Best of Luck Chaps and have a great time but beware Brummies have a strange sense of humour as well as a weird accent.
Yep, they do have a loo but you wouldn't want to use it twice, or sit near it. If you get a double decker, the upstairs seats are pretty spacious but not sure any heating reaches up there.
The schedule for the friday aint so bad from M/C - 09:50 arr 11:40, rtn 20:00 arr 22:00. Terminus 5min walk from Wellington.
In fact, it's only 30mins longer than the train(!), so the still-available £4 e/w ain't bad.

Rob,
Southern are currently showing me a £28.60 Off Peak Return from Manchester to Birmingham - add your journey to Piccadilly on to that. That return would be valid on most trains at the time you'd want to travel, I would think.
Right - this may be what you need. Try Crewe to Birmingham. Southern (again) and Virgin both have fares at £7 each way. I'm sure you should be able to get from Rochdale to Crewe and back for a reasonable amount (£13.70, it seems). I've not looked at Manchester to Crewe (you may have cheaper options for getting to the city centre from where you live).
Try a few options (if you have the patience!). You may find something at a sensible price.
See you in Birmingham then
