I've found this very small photo of a match on the green from 1968, and would guess that it was flat. But it's very hard to tell unless the photo is taken deliberately to show the crown.

Just The Ship for me. I didn't go in the pub (I don't think), so can't comment on it, but the 'garden' is - or was - in one of the least attractive locations I can think of.

I've been to half of those: Skirrid Mountain Inn (in 1979), the Old Trip to Jerusalem (most recently in May 2017) and Tan Hill Inn (cycled there from Grinton in 2016). One of the 'also rans' mentioned is the Bingley Arms, and I've now sussed out buses to get me there and back before the Leeds Rhinos game tomorrow.
