Default Pub Of The Month - January 2012

A New Year dawns and hopefully lots of new pubs to visit.

I actually have two here and it's only 10 January! The Crown Inn, Beeston, Nottingham, and equally as impressive is The Shakespeare's Head, Leicester. Enjoying the darts at the minute!

While I had my beer of this week there, my pub of the month will not be Stalybridge Buffet Bar. Refused me service at 10:30am, allowed a hen party to come in with contraband 5 minutes later and served them at 10:55am. They should have been kicked out for their shrieking.

It's probably going to be North Bar..but I think they need to do more American inspired beer rather than European stuff. Sour beers do not work.

Called in Common again after the Winter Ales fest and they really are trying hard and now have 2 changing guests on the bar having ditched the Flowers Original.

No doubt they're benefitting from the success of Port Street Beer House on the beer front as Common is their sister bar.

Port Street also put themselves in the frame after my latest visit last week.

My pub of the month will be Post Office Vaults in Birmingham as it is an exciting new venue and is doing great things for anyone who enjoys beers from Belgium as well as having a range of real ales and ciders. On my way back for another visit today.

Places I've enjoyed this month have been The Anchor in Digbeth, Whitefriars in Coventry, Foley's and North Bar in Leeds, and The Nags Head in Reading.

I think Whitefriars edges it, and I'd recommend having a bite to eat there too. Great chips..

Pub visits have been rather limited this month, but I enjoyed a session on Wednsday in Mr Foley's, Leeds, so that can be my POTM.

    Old Bell & Crown

For me it has to be this one - exceptionally pleasant and worth makign a detour for.

The Plough Inn . A fine start to the year, with beers from the new Kent Brewery and my beloved Hopodaemon, together with good locally produced food.

Got around a lot of very good pubs this month. I really enjoyed the Wellington and Post Office Vaults in Birmingham, the beautiful Argyll Arms in Oxford Circus and the ever reliable Euston Tap.

Two pubs stood out from the rest though - Pretty Bricks(New Inns) in Walsall and Arkwright Arms in Duckmanton, Chesterfield. Both excellent pubs that I could have happily spent the rest of my day in - if I have to pick one, the Pretty Bricks just about gets the nod.
