Had a couple of pints of the really excellent Dark Star Espresso last night at the Southampton Arms in Kentish Town.

    Runners and riders:

    Oakham Bishops Farewell, Crackers
    Fullers Discovery, ESB
    Ginger Marble
    Kent Pale, Cob Nut
    Northern Flamingo Embers
    TT Landlord
    Wadsworth Swordfish
    Old Mill Winter Warmer

Not a bad selection at all but some of the most promising weren't in the best condition sadly. Both Oakham ales were excellent, as ever, and the Kent Pale was delicious, very similar to Blue Monkey BG Sips. BOTW though goes to the top quality TT Landlord at The Grapes in Limehouse. Couldn't keep it in the glass.

A mixed bag this week ,

    Mallinsons - Motueka
    Green Mill - Flavia
    Brightside - Maverick IPA
    Greenfield - High and Dry
    Abbeydale - Black Mass
    Wye Valley - Butty Bach

The Mallinsons was disapointing , not up to their usual (high) standards , the Abbeydale Black Mass lived up to its name , the couple of pints i had to finish off the session , the cause of the dark satanic pains in my skull on Saturday morning

    BOTW Green Mill - Flavia

A few months ago I really enjoyed a Kent Brewery Zingiber and I happened across two more of their ales while on a short tour of Kentish Town. The Cobnut was very acceptable while my BOTW goes to Kent Brewery Pale which was the highlight of a slighty underwhelming visit to The Southampton Arms.

I hadnt really registered this micro before so checking in the GBG it was good to find that one of the co founders was the ex brewer from Dark Star ,which explains a lot.

Will be keeping an eye out for their brews in future.

    Quite mixed for me too:

    Thornbridge – Pivni
    Brewdog – Winter Porter
    Black Band – Porter
    Kirkstall/Odell – Aquitaine
    Woodforde – Wherry
    Oakham – Mompesson’s Gold
    Timmy Taylor – Landlord
    Oakham – Citra
    Nethergate– Umbel Ale

Didn't think much of the liquorice tasting Black Band Porter nor the Umbel Ale, but Brewdog's Winter Porter was deliciously chocolatey, and Oakham's Mompesson's Gold really floated my boat as well. However, they were all outclassed by the delectable 8% Kirkstall/Odell's Aquitaine. Even if it did cost a whopping £6.80 in the Sheffield Tap, it set me up well for the return leg of my day trip.

I went back for one more on the Tuesday, quite late. The Espresso was still on, though not quite so good - or perhaps it was just tinged with the disappointment of the Hatters failing to beat AFC Telford United at home.

I was also in the Pineapple on Wednesday last week, and I see there's a review from each of you the next day, so I've obviously just missed you again! The Kent Cob Nut was good but the Bass was undistinguished.

At the Bricklayers in Luton on the Tuesday I was lucky enough to get a pint of Elgoods North Brink Porter just before the barrel ended.

    A short but distinguished list:
    Adnam's Old Ale
    Larkin's Traditional
    Old Dairy's Red Top

After an apparent lean spell, Larkin's Traditional looks as if it is back and firing on all cylinders: toffeeish, malty and a long, deep earthy hoppiness. So much flavour for an ABV of 3.4. My favourite session beer. What's more, originally hop farmers, the brewery family have gone back to cultivating the noble bine. My BOTW.
