ETA is definitely on a roll. From his latest review of The Slug & Lettuce
"As the name suggests, this place is slow moving, slimey and not something you want in your back yard."

A revisit 10 years later found the terrific interior unchanged but ,after a change of hands,a much better ale selection.Gone are the national brands, all brewers are chosen because of their excellence and the chatty landlady told us they always have two dark ales ,one of which will be pokey (on my trip Roosters Scoundrel).
The Strugglers Inn
What is 'pokey' BF??
"I spied some sofa seating in the rear of the pub, but didn’t investigate as the barmaid was more interesting."
Oh dear, Steve!
Cleveland Arms
"This isn’t somewhere I’ll be visiting again anytime soon."
So, not that interesting after all.
Come On You Hatters!
But more so than the mould-breaking Real Ale Tavern?
E TA left this review about The Thomas Tallis
I had been trying to visit this one for some time, having heard great things, and my Spem in Allium was definitely rewarded – it was a brilliant visit.
Good 'un.
"At that moment I would have given a kingdom, not for champagne or hock and soda, or hot coffee but for a glass of beer" Marquess Curzon of Kedlestone, Viceroy of India.
Spem in Alium is a choral work by Thomas Tallis. Apparently the phrase in Latin means "hope in any other", or perhaps "there must be a decent pub *somewhere* in this godforsaken hole". (If you read the review that I posted after my visit in 2019, you'll see that my - slightly different but no less fervent - hope was also fulfilled in the Thomas Tallis in Canterbury. Maybe there's something in this religion lark after all.)
