Spem in Alium is a choral work by Thomas Tallis. Apparently the phrase in Latin means "hope in any other", or perhaps "there must be a decent pub *somewhere* in this godforsaken hole". (If you read the review that I posted after my visit in 2019, you'll see that my - slightly different but no less fervent - hope was also fulfilled in the Thomas Tallis in Canterbury. Maybe there's something in this religion lark after all.)

I thought the Scruffy Murphy's chain had gone to the wall many moons ago. I remember drinking in Alice House when it was a branch back in the '90s.

Yeah, I think most of them died out late 90's/early 00's. However, the one Al visited is a new bar with no links to the former chain.

Thorn Tree Inn, "we were requested not to wake a baby sleeping in a pram", what?, wow! in a pub?
Positive review from Blue Scrumpy but, without wanting to appear mean (or meaner than I am), a policy restricting customer interaction because an infant is sleeping is just wrong.
