When I worked in Sunderland in the 60's I loved Double Maxim, and when my sister went to teacher training college she drunk some of the male students under the table on Newcastle Brown Ale.

Brought up on the good stuff!

I had shares in S & N and admit to a nice fat profit when they sold to Heineken, which at least enables me to drink HSB, now brewed by Fullers, not sure where but I guess Chiswick

    A cruel world

Some of the ex Vaux brewers set up the Double Maxim brewery in Houghton le Spring. Not Sunderland but close enough and certainly an authentic North East brewery producing a classical Brown Ale.

I was chatting to one of them in Quakerhouse in Darlington when he was saying they were starting up the Double Maxim Brewery. They wanted the Vaux name, but it would have cost too much.

They said it would only be available around a 50 mile or so radius, but the first Double Maxim beer I had was at St Albans beer fest in 2007.
