    Hi ROBCamra,

We have corrected the name of Whitelocks First City Luncheon Bar. Our photos seem to imply otherwise, but I realise they are old now. Do you know if the exterior has changed?

    Thanks for that.

No the exterior is the same (at least it was on Saturday).

It's had the full name ever since it was renamed from The Turks Head years ago.

The Whitelocks were the people who owned it.

The pub is also still badged as the Turks Head on some external signage & windows AND there's another bar called Ma Gamps along the alley which is also part of the pub, rather than a separate place.

I think they use Whitelocks as an abbreviation on their "A" boards etc as the full name is too long. Similar to The Victoria Family And Commercial is The Vic or Victoria on theirs (although not on the exterior signage).

Think I prefer the abbreviated name personally.

    Oh well.

Sorry, it's not my fault, I didn't name it.

    Hi Conrad,

I took some photos of Whitelocks on Saturday night. If the normal criterion we use is "what's the name on the signage?", then in my view we should revert to simply Whitelocks.

I take Rob Camra's point about the original name, and this is confirmed to some extent by my photo of one of the windows, where the words Turks Head and Luncheon Bar can be made out. The door, however, has both the more recent Whitelocks logo and the original First City Luncheon Bar wording.

To me the clincher is the modern board in the alley entrance, in which the phrase First City Luncheon Bar is in the same type and given the same prominance as the phrases Original Victorian Restaurant and Glorious New and Old World Wines.

Picking up on what Rob wrote about Ma Gamps, the additional bar further up Turks Head Yard, it seems to me that the First City Luncheon Bar is perhaps only part of the whole Whitelocks pub experience, so that in fact it is really a little bit misleading to have this as its full name in PuG. (On the Whitelocks website, where Whitelocks is given a big bold font and the subsidiary name is given a much smaller one, there are interior shots of the main bar (i.e. the First City Luncheon Bar), the restaurant and what they refer to as the top bar.)

As neither you nor Rob seemed particularly keen on having the full name, and no one else has chipped in yet, how about reverting to just Whitelocks?

    Cheers

I was about to write that if ROB didn't care he wouldn't have asked for the change, I fear his recent post hammers that home without me though.

    It's a matter of consistency.

If we want abbreviations then The Cask Pub And Kitchen in Pimlico becomes The Cask.

The Victoria Family And Commercial Hotel in Leeds becomes The Vic or The Victoria.

The Athletic Arms in Edinburgh becomes The Diggers.

I'm afraid pubs are called what they are, whether we like their given name or not in my opinion. Sorry.

I think we need some method of consistency and for me that has always been the pubs sign, hence my reticence personally on this one. But I agree with what you are saying ROB and as such I think this is one of those exceptions that prove the rule.
