Hi all,

My company is flying me to Amsterdam to work for a few days on Wednesday. I don't expect to have much time for socialising but I hope to fit a couple of beers in !
Does anybody know the place at all ?? I have never been before so any tips would be welcome.

And I have to add that I am not interested in the red light district

I visited the Dam some years ago for a stag weekend - Loved it, but can't remember anything after getting off the double decker train and walking into the first cafe!

Actually, there are no kerbs and the trams wizz past so try not to get hit and the red light district is probably one of the strangest places I've ever been to as there are families with young children walking around as it is a tourist attraction. Oh yeah, I also smoked a joint outside Anne Frank's old house, which was very disrespectful and I still feel guilty. Also, the Dutch seem to love techno music.

My personal favourites are In De Wildeman, De Bieraard, De Storke and De Elfte Gebod. All are fairly close to Centraal station. The last two are at the top edge of the red light district.

There are load of good bars around the Jordaan area but Dam Square, Liedseplein & Nieuwmarkt are very touristy.

To be honest if you're outside the red light district almost any bar you visit will be at least OK with a choice of draft beers.

The last time a I got ratted on beer alone was in Amsterdam. It usually takes a mix of wine as well to get me there.

In addition to Robcamra's recommendations you could try these, especially Gollum,

Café 't Arendsnest - Herengracht 90, Amsterdam (opens at 4pm)
Cafe Gollem - 4 Raamsteeg, Amsterdam between Spuistraat & Singel
Cafe Belgique - Gravenstraat, Amsterdam (near Wilderman - opens at 3pm)
Cracked Kettle - 3 Raamsteeg (off-license opposite Gollem)

As RC says anywhere is pretty good in Amsterdam, however some places are gay or lesbian only.

I had a week there in 1983 i floated round for a few days after smoking something through a bong and got drunk the rest of the week.
We went in loads of bars but i did'nt think they were as thick on the ground as they are in London or other large British citys.
