Sorry about the delay in chipping in, but I've been away for a week, sampling the delights of Swaledale. SD I'd agree with OB that Huddersfield is a fantastic town for drinking. Leeds has some good pubs, but is not outstanding in the way that Huddersfield and Sheffield are. Having said that there are more than enough for a good day out.
Wakefield has about half a dozen or so good to excellent venues, unfortunately most don't open until 4-5 o'clock.
Another possibility is doing the 'rail ale trail', taking in such delights as The West Riding Refreshment Rooms at Dewsbury Station and the Buffet Bar at Stalybridge station.
Rail travel in West Yorkshire is actually pretty good and you can get an off peak train and bus Day Rider for £6.20. It may be easier to plan your sorties by venue rather than towns.

That one didn't come up in my searches, but on reading some newish reviews elsewhere it may have dropped off a little in choice and possibly quality. If you think it's ok I might drop in. The must visit list, bearing mind it's my first drinking visit to Derby, looks like this:-

    Alexandra
    Brunswick
    Flowerpot
    Olde Dolphin
    Old Silk Mill
    Station Inn

and if there's time, money, and/or capacity maybe these

    Babbington
    Brewery Tap
    Smithfield
    (Wardwick Tavern)

whoops a bit of thread drift here

Having lived in Derby for 3 years.

Beware of Old Silk Mill's erratic opening hours.

Olde Dolphin is oldest pub in Derby and mind your head on way in

Avoid Station Inn at any costs. Had unpleasant experience with landlord and poor quality of ales.

Flowerpot is quite hard to find as it is hidden away from City Centre. Cracking pub with over 10 ales on sale including one 10% proof ale!

You are forgetting The Standing Order famed for huge room and high celling. You will see what I mean when you set inside the pub..

EDIT: Forget to add this pub http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/7010/ which is stones away from Flowerpot. Worth have a look in.
