After last week's total abstinence, I was craving something strong and warming and fortunately there have been plenty of beers around that fitted the bill. In the end, it became a two horse race between Thornbridge 'Merrie' and the fabulous Fernandes 'Black Bear Smoked Stout'. Weighing in at 7%, it certainly warmed the cockles! Possibly close to being a 'Marmite' beer, nevertheless I loved it. Easily my BOTW.

No contest this week - BOTW by a long way is Young's Winter Warmer. Always something to look forward to this time of year and I had a fine pint in the Lamb, Bloomsbury on Friday evening.

Been a thin week for me also as I rest my liver for when my main seasonal festivities kick off this friday.

But have taken the opportunity to pop in my local 'spoons a couple of times last week and came across the Skinners Xmas Ale, Jingle Knockers.
Had to try it for the name alone but found it a really nice 5.5% strong amber Christmas ale.

    So this is my BOTW.

Once again Elland 1872 Porter is in there batting again along with Marston Moor Wild Boar Stout.

Cottage Christmas Cracker was poor, but not "Bloody Awful".

Winner this week is Springhead Roaring Meg. It's one of my favourite beers.

Light, hoppy and doesn't taste like the dangerous 5.5% it is.

It was on in The Baum briefly this week. It went on the bar at 10 on Tuesday night and had sold out by Wednesday afternoon.

72 pints in about 6 hours on one of the quieter days of the week.

As a matter of interest the winner in the 9 gallon stakes is Mallinsons Hops At Work which lasted 2.5 hours a few weeks ago.

The winner in the 18 gallon stakes is Phoenix White Monk which lasted just over 4 hours one day last year.

Only one visit to the pub, where I reprised my BOTW of a couple of weeks back, so my BOTW goes to my discovery of the week-Black Pig Imperial Russian Porter from Wantsum Brewery in East Kent, a lovely ruby, nutty, malty and tangy beer. I had it in bottle, and am looking forward to trying it from cask.

Sounds very promising. According to the Wantsum website, 'Black Pig' refers to the washed-up wreckage of ships from the Spanish Armada! Have you tried '1381'? On paper it looks to be a great session beer.

Tried quite a few ‘Christmas’ beers this week, in what turned out to be a futile attempt at jolting myself towards feeling festive. They ranged from poor to OK, so beer of the week ended up as a drink-off between Camerons Monkey Stout and Caledonian Double Dark.

    Caledonian Double Dark wins.
And you can really taste the hops!
