    Default East Sussex

I'm off to East Sussex for a year and will trawl all of the pubs within an hours trip, good or bad, as usual. Any I should make a note of visiting? FILO, Hastings and Evening Star Brighton are already noted!

A wide net, but taking a year to cast it shows admirable commitment!

I would recommend The Stanley Arms in Portslade. Fishersgate is the nearest stn, 10mins from Brighton. On the train from Brighton, you need to cross the bridge before following my review tip on finding the place. Also, they open later in the afternoon Mon-Fri (Mon 4pm, Tues-Fri 3pm). A dartboard in both rooms & at least 2 beer festivals a year.

The mighty Darts have a cracking away game this Saturday at Lewes where there are many mighty fine pubs if the reviews are anything to go by. I will be making a day of it and looking at ticking off at least a dozen but have a provisional list of 16 - I'll see how it goes and report back in due course.

Lewes pubs are indeed very good on the whole, but there are many, many good pubs in East Sussex you lucky man!

One place you won't find on PG that is well worth visiting is Middle Farm at Firle on the A27, east of Lewes. Get someone else to drive though!!

Stanley Arms added to the list. I've had a long day wandering the pubs in Lewes and I found some fantatic places, well worth a return trip.

Pangolin, how did you know that I love a bit of cider? I'll defo make a point of checking out the farm!

if heading west the murrell arms Barnham ( for Fontwell racecourse) http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/39399/ is a quirky old style pub. Not been for about 18 months so not reviewed it here.

That is very west, but sounds right up my street - added to the list - cheers!

Anything Harvey's is worth it. There are some rural gems and I've never been in a Harvey's pub I wouldn't return to.

I must say that I am really looking forward to going miles out of the way to visit this place. I wonder how many people that have slung themselves off the cliffs had no intention of doing so before arriving at Beachy Head.

I can now endorse that. Ticked off (in order) the John Harvey Tavern. Gardeners Arms, Dorset Arms, Elephant & Castle, Lewes Arms, Kings Head, Black Horse, Brewers Arms, White Hart, Royal Oak & the Crown (as well as a pint in the football ground!). 3 or 4 I would probably knock off a list of must do's but there were another 6 or 7 I didn't get to that would probably replace them. I managed a different beer in every pub until the White Hart where I had to double up on Harveys Best as it was all they had. The only dispappointment was that I found no Dark Star anywhere. I think Lewes may become a regular diary date.
