One way you used to be able to tell if the bitter was rubbish in a pub was if everyone was on draught Guinness, but lager has long since seen to that. I've always had Guinness for that reason though, no real ale or, as is too often the case round our way, a choice between Pride and GKIPA.

I am with Running Dog on this one, I do not understand the passion for what appears to be used sump oil and probably tastes similar. In the past I have drank the odd stout but Guiness is far to bitter for me. So you can all have my share.
    Your round R.D.?

    Anytime, old son..........
I think I'd best explain that over the years I've drunk a damn sight more than me fair share of Guinness. In the past, a different country I know, I've loved the stuff, but not today. More like dirty dishwater than sump oil..........

    I don't drink Guinness.

Primarily because I had the pleasure of a month working in Cork many many moons ago, and despite what their advertising exec's would have you believe, it really is a different drink on the Emerald Isle, and an experience I have given up trying to replicate in London.

And you drank Guinness rather than the Cork brewed Beamish?

    Did you visit here?

It's quite a strange thing when somebody compliments you on your Guinness. Ale takes a little care and attention, but Guinness is simply clean lines, clean glass, clean bar staff. As for that surger thing, one pub we went in that had no cask, so asked for Guinness. When this can came out the fridge, we said we'd leave it and come back when an ale was on. The bloke was so adamant that it tasted just like the real thing he offered to pay for it if we weren't completely happy with it. Dad had one, and apart from being too cold to taste left an aftertaste of some description. Why the pub didn't have RAIB in the fridge instead I'll never know

Whatever happened to Beamish ? Quite popular around the Irish theme pubs in the 90s and I could drink the stout . I thought they were the first to bring in a "red" version. Not seen hide nor hair for ages.

If I have to drink an Irish stout, I would rather have Beamish than Guinness anyday (even though it is now brewed by the charmless Heineken Ireland in the same factory as Murphys).

Never been to Ireland and always have 'draught' Guinness in stock. You all may call me a heathen but I'm happy with my inferior taste buds! I’ve even turned on the oven to stick one of my Pukka Pies in.
