Yes that's the southern portal of Dudley Tunnel ,and you need the permission of the Dudley Tunnel Trust to enter. If you fit under the height gauge they send an electric tug to pull you through as there are no ventilation shafts,it's a single 7ft bore and 3154 yards long.

A few years ago a boater realising his boat was too large still raised the height gauge one evening ,drove through and then got wedged about 1000 yards along. The idiot had to wade/swim out and raise the alarm.21 miles of the Wolverhampton Level had to be lowered around 1 ft to get the boat out again.........needless to say a large bill was presented to the owner.

Excellent tale, what an idiot! Pretty frustrating for anyone else waiting to get through in either direction - I hope the bill was very large...

Wow! That's 330% longer than the Islington Tunnel - you probably see even less light at the end of the tunnel than Bozzer. I can't imagine how the old bargemen managed to walk their boats through.

Boris used to live in a house just above Islington Tunnel before his divorce and elevation to Number 10.It's a mere bagatelle compared with the 5866 yards of Stanedge Tunnel underneath the Pennines. There were professional leggers there at both ends to help shift working boats through in the 19th and early 20th century .Hard graft indeed.

Indeed. Maison Bozzer's end of terrace ahead, towpath entrance at right. With his Labour MP up the road. Perhaps that's the real reason why he sold up.

His wife kicking him out for being a philanderer might have played some part in that.

Quite so. He would have known that he was going to live in a very safe Labour seat. Perhaps he just liked drinking in the Charles Lamb.
