Default To Close or Not To Close?

The Bull & Last - a building site until recently, this is probably the most drinker-unfriendly of pubs, dining being their [soda] bread and butter (£3.00), with laid tables and drinking confined to two small tables in front of the bar, then just space for about four at the bar. Building work recently completed, it has reopened, with social engineering meaning that these tables are now for eating and now shunted up to the bar to inrease distancing, access for diners only. Indeed the pub's website says it's bookings only and just for diners.

So: given that at least for the time being, this is now a restaurant with no drinking space, should this be marked closed or open?

In order to maintain our delusion that things will return to some sort of normal, I would not - just yet - mark this one as closed. When all restrictions are removed and you try to get a drink there and are refused, that's when it's not a pub.

The announcement does say closing 'temporarily', with a plan to reopen in 'the autumn', so let's hope that's right.

I do hope so. I used to live in Castlefield in the glory days of the 2010s and it was a great crawl around there. Wharf, Cask, Knott. But mainly Cask...
