I felt more of a culture shock moving roughly 100 miles to the north east from the North west, than the same distance from the North west to west Wales...

I was born in Kent, North of the North Downs, so far North in fact that we could see the North Sea and the Medway Estuary from our house. Therefore North Kent is The North, while anything North of the Medway is The Far North. Once you get past London, it's The Frozen North, while I'm pretty sure once you get past the polar bears and igloos of Watfordshiire you can see The North Pole over the satanic mills of Yorkshire and the other Scottish counties.

Not necessarily, depends how you define "infinity" a mathematician will define it one way, a meta-physicist in an entirely different way, Sheffield can be in the South and Norfolk in the North but not perhaps in the same universe.
