I only ever popped in here as a very occasional meeting point but it seems a shame that a decent real ale outlet in an otherwise forgettable beer area should succumb to yet another corporate minimarket.
There had been hope, some while back, that the Rose & Crown on Church Street may re-open with 6 or so pumps, but I now find this...

I despair of such idiots, and planning permission still being given to this end...

That's a tragic end for the Rose and Crown.Generations of my family drank in there ,it's just around the corner from the shop.

I use it frequently, as it's one of the closest pubs to my office and the only one serving decent beer. It's not the greatest 'Spoons, but they've made great strides in recent years sorting out the undesirables and improving the beer quality. In recent months it's been the busiest I've ever seen it.

That is just depressing. This was one of four Croydon pubs on CAMRA's historic pub interiors list. The Newton Arms shut a couple of years ago and has now also been converted into flats, the Swan and Sugarloaf is now a Tesco store and a couple of months ago the last survivor, The Victoria Cross, also closed it's doors to make way for more flats. And then there were none...
