There is a confusion in that East Croydon to Brighton trains are generally Thameslink, while to Hove is Southern and they charge fares on a different basis, but I can't see how you get a £12 Hove one?
It gets even more confusing (and expensive) if you change onto a Gatwick Express train to Brighton, yet the stupid thing is that they are all run by the same company!
On leaving the bar, I felt a strong blow to the back of my head. Turning round, I discovered it was the pavement

A Southern Rail off peak return from Eastbourne to London Victoria is £22.50, but an off peak return from London Victoria to Eastbourne is £39.90. Crazy!

Probably to do with the time restrictions.

Turned out I knew I'd been once before as soon as I got inside, even played toad in the back on previous visit. Ah well, good pint but not a new tick.
Hop Poles was £19 for 3 pints, crafty!!
Lion and Lobster gone downhill over the years, we were the only ones in for a quick pint around 17:00

My day return seemed flexible this time, allowed me to change onto GWE at Haywards Heath, which was quickest route. The 35min Southern fast train from EC seems to have disappeared these days.

Yes, I've seen something similar, with boasts that beer brewed (conditioned?) on the premises, e.g, Meantime/Pilsner Urquell with the tag 'drink fresh beer'. I saw a pub somewhere which had the notion of advertising 'craft' cask; a real pity that CAMRA doesn't promote this, perhaps to distinguish between the small-scale cask brewers and the mainstream bunch.

In Hove the Watchmakers Arms they brew on site occasionally and the Neptune home to the Larrikin brewery.

I take this as good news.

Pubs that have difficulty selling real ale from 72-pint firkins while the beer is fresh either end up selling dodgy beer or stop selling cask altogether.

Getting real ales in 36-pint pins (which has been quite difficult or impossible from most breweries) should mean that they can sell from the smaller cask is half the time, to the potential benefit of both consumer and pub.

Pressumably the cost of beer in the smaller container will be greater per pint than in the larger one to the end purchaser.
