    Default An interesting conundrum

    https://www.independent.co.uk/news/u...-a8889881.html

If the reporting is true perish the thought, I'm not sure about this one. My natural libertarian sensibilities say the owner has the right to do what he wishes with his property especially as the council shut the place down to start with,on the other hand I don't like to see a viable pub closed, then again the polis said it's a sh*te hole and there's a loss of trade. And it's now apparently unlicensed. Confusing eh?

I'd reopen it at silly ever changing hours and put it on the market at a daft price (if it got a license), oh isn't that what pubco's do with unwanted pubs?

Alternatively just bribe someone in the council to shut up, that's probably the cheapest way.

Did they? My reading is that he shut it voluntarily after the police called for a review of the licence. I'm with the council on this one.

Indeed. Allowing him to convert the place is the thin edge of the wedge, especially if it was an ACV. Look at what happened to https://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/23799/

Sheer stroke of brilliance by Sainsbury's in Scotland:

I particularly like the comment “We don’t offer multi-buys in Scotland for any products which contain alcohol and Erdinger Alkoholfrei lager is no exception."!!
On leaving the bar, I felt a strong blow to the back of my head. Turning round, I discovered it was the pavement

Doesn't appear to be an ACV, however loss of a community amenity can be grounds to reject a planning application if the council has such a policy in place.

Thought I knew Canterbury pubs-never heard of this one, though the area used to be rough-well it was 50 years ago.
