Reading yesterdays papers revealed that the march of the foodie pub continues in popularity. Whitbread reported good results for its Harvester, All Bar None, O Niells and the rest of its chains. Conversely Enterprise and Punch still find it necessary to sell off property. One wonders what will be the eventual result of this policy. So many of our well loved locals struggle on under the banner of these two companies.
The editorials would have it that to make any headway then food had to be part of the operation.
And you can really taste the hops!
This somehow managed to pass me by until yesterday. Deep fried beer anyone?

It's unclear what calling time on 6000 pubs means in reality, but I am sure it will be another reason to dislike Punch Taverns.

May I recall my post 223 of this thread.....what happens to Punch when the property runs out ? Seeing as I beat the Independent to it I think I may consider a career as an economic analyst and investment guru. I cannot do any worse than the present lot and a dose of common sense is long overdue. The money would be a welcome top up to my meager income.
I think Punch is a prime example of everything that went wrong with British industry in the recent past. Buyouts with large borrowings, Accountants calling the shots and young things with a degree running the shop with little understanding of local needs.Milk it for all its worth to pay the interest and sell of valuable assets .It reminds me of the slow death of Rover . Nomura purchased a lot of pubs but I have not heard of problems they may have encountered. Whitbread wandered in the wilderness for quite while but, though their business plan is not to everyones taste, they have finally got a grip.
Punch 's only future would appear to be a debt ridden property company.
Blast the batteries on my crystal ball are running low...must go.
