The typical Yorkshire reply from the club secretary made me chuckle:

“The brewery wants to weaken the beer and raise the price. We are going to sit the rep down and tell him it either goes down or it goes out.”

The fate of John Smiths Smooth will have no impact on me at all, but when you look at the bigger picture , it's very depressing.

No doubt some idiot marketing clown will claim that this is "due to public demand". A rubbish product is even more rubbish than before and I thought that would be impossible.

Thus saving Heineken the beer duty of about 3p per pint, so in reality a 5.5p per pint increase. And guess what the Chancellor will do to beer duty in April? put that 3p a pint back on.

    The BBC report includes:
"Extensive research conducted with John Smith's retailers and consumers consistently confirmed that a 0.2% reduction in ABV does not compromise on the taste and quality [<-- insert your own joke here] that has made the brand the UK's most popular ale and we are confident that John Smith's Extra Smooth will continue to lead the ale category going forward."

It is a product completely devoid of "taste and quality" so this is correct!
