They had one Mead at the CAMRA festival in Watford recently. If I recall correctly it was from Lyme Bay Winery, the one mentioned in the article. I suppose it could be considered a bit of a fad; but saying that, both the craft beer and gin fads have been successful for a while.
I've just joined Alcoholics Anonymous - I still drink, just under a different name.

Grauniad readers' drink if there ever was...

I have made mead in the past. The last time was in British Rail days (which were nowhere near as bad as some rabid right wing journalists and politicians claim) when Boots started doing rail offers if you bought a load of stuff from them. The only thing I could think of getting was several large jars of honey which were converted to mead. I don't recall it being that great, maybe Boots honey was rubbish.

It's sold at the Herdwick bar at Lancaster University and actually very popular indeed. That may or may not be a good indicator. Personally I predict rum to be the next fad though.

Craft beer is not a fad.

Much of the problem is explained within the article, there are many unhelpful wrongs, going on, but the article itself reveals the bigger overall picture as to why many pubs can't/don't survive in certain areas in the modern world.

If you sell beer for £2.30 a pint even if its Tetley you are going to fail as a pub.unless you have the buying power and turnover of Wetherspoons.

The problem isn't just Wetherspoons but more the blinkered policies of the large pubcos, ie sell rubbish beer and rely on TV screens to bring in the punters. The price difference between JDWs and "proper" pubs in the Midlands and North is far smaller than it is in London where it can be as much as £2.00 a pint or more. Another factor is unemployment, these Pennine towns have lost all their manufacturing industry and the transport links are pretty rubbish which deters anyone from going to work in the nearest major town or city.
I'm pretty sure that the financial crisis ten years ago hit these places much harder than the South and if the Swivel Eyed Loonies get their way they are in for another massive hit.
