A shame - I gave him quite a few photos over the years.

Ha! When I started reading the article, I thought that the beers were named after current local prostitutes and that the women on the webpage were a couple of disgruntled sex-workers, angered at being outted.

British pub numbers grow for first time in decade

Wales ended the year with 25 fewer pubs, Scotland declined by five and Northern Ireland increased by the same amount but England recorded an increase of 345. The expansion was mainly thanks to larger pubs.

I suspect by larger pubs they actually mean pub-themed restaurants such as the dreadful "Something Farm" and such like from GK and Marstons. Other than micro-pubs I don't see any pubs opening, just brewery taps and craft bars.

It may have been better to refer to on-licenses.

The Guardian seems to provide a very loose interpretation of what constitutes a 'pub'. I don't think that converting any old place for the consumption of alcohol constitutes saving or creating a 'pub'. I think of Tapping the Admiral (boarded up for four years), The Up In Arms (reopened after four years) and The Plough (closed for 95 years) as constituting the number of pubs being on the up; personally I wouldn't describe the Barrel Vault as a 'pub', IMHO.

The survey is based on Office of National Statistics data using Standard Industrial Classication code 56302 Public Houses and Bars, i.e. anywhere that filed their company return under that category.
It is intriguing that the largest growth areas are the North East and the West Midlands, and that smaller premises are down despite the number of micro openings.
On leaving the bar, I felt a strong blow to the back of my head. Turning round, I discovered it was the pavement

The splendid Station Buffet in Bridlington closes on Dec 24th and the railwayana contents are to be sold off at auction.

How sad. I suppose that Churchman's Noted Counter Shag will be looking for a new job; not a pub service I've seen offered before.
