Default Autumn 2019 Shrewsbury Crawl Dates and Venues

To stop the other threads getting over-long and unwieldy here's a list of dates for discussion and a list of the GBG2019 pubs that are more central.

    October 4, 11, 18, & 25
    November 1, 8, 15, 22 & 29.

    Admiral Benbow
    The Coach & Horses
    The Nag's Head
    Montgomery's Tower (Lloyds No 1)
    The Salopian Bar
    Three Fishes

Further out are The Dolphin & The Woodman and in the other direction Cross Foxes, The Prince Of Wales and The Abbey but all might be considered too far out?

I’m away for a sizeable chunk of November and cannot do four of those dates..
So statistically I think that makes it that I have a 55.6% chance of making this one...

Thank ob for getting the ball rolling.in terms of Fridays I could do Oct 4,18 and Nov 1 , 15.

In terms of route I guess we need some local input of non GBG pubs that are worth considering (if any). If ,however, some walking is required to sample the best of the Shrewsbury pub scene then so be it.

I suggested last year that we bring the autumn crawl date forward - we had previously gone for November in order to avoid the school half term at the end of October and its likely impact on train ticket availability. Half term is week commencing 21st, so this means the 18th would be the day that most schools break up. This leaves us with the options of the first two Fridays of October, or of course any Friday in November. Given that the clocks will be going back on 27th October, it will be getting dark early (which was partly the reason I suggested going for October). So I would advocate going for the early dates in October.

Sorry I hadn't realised, as you had attached the GBG list I thought you meant it had been missed off.

    Yorkshire House anyone?

    Did someone say local knowledge

The well trodden Ale Route around Shrewsbury inside the Loop (Shrewsburys nearly an island , the Loop refers to the part of town inside the loop of the River Severn) goes like this

Salopian Bar , modernish Ale Bar
Shrewsbury Hotel(JDW) , most publike of the 2 spoons in town
Armoury, gastro pub but a good selection of ales
Montgomerys Tower (JDW) , less publike but better beer
Wheatsheaf , Marstons usually 6/7 beers on
Three Fishs , very good pub , 6/7 mostly local beers
Loggerheads , Marstons , worth a visit for the interior
Yorkshire House , its a bit bonkers
Nags Head , can be hit and miss ale wise , but has a 500 year old smoking shelter
Coach and Horses , lovelly victorian corner pub , usually 4/5 local beers
Admiral Benbow , decent pub 6/7 local beers

Its worth a walk up Coton Hill to the Woodman and the Royal Oak , its only a 5/10 minute walk , the Dolphin is also worth a walk but is a bit further .

Plenty of other pubs around in town , and a short walk away .

The Abbey must have changed a hell of a lot , its was just a bog standard Ember Inns pub on the few times i have been there .

Beer was OK (though unadventurous) when I was there a year or so ago, and maybe the music would suit some tastes, but it's not a must-visit in my view.
