I am with you on the Birch Hall Inn, Oldboots. I popped in there on my way home from Whitby last year. Its amazing and quirky.

Which Whitby pubs do you recommend for real ale? I like the Endeavour, Black Horse Vaults, Granby, the Station and, although the beer choice is not spectacular, I really like the Elsinore and Little Angel. I am a bit crazy about Whitby.

Sadly whenever we go to Whitby, which is rare due to its parking problems, I end up driving and 'er indoors won't let me near the pub, I think the only one I've ever managed is the Endeavour. Whitby is a great place, parking aside, much nicer than Scarborough, Filey or Brid'.

This is on of those threads that make me jealous. My little corner the world is something of a desert for decent pubs, but here goes.
The 'Nightjar',Ferndown, my local JDW, so not to everyones taste.
The 'Bermuda Triangle, Parkstone, Odd place but with a sometimes stunning range of beer.
The 'Drovers Inn', Gussage All Saints, A Ringwood Brewery pub, set in beautifull countrside, that usually has excellent beer and even better food.
The 'Inn on the Furlong', Ringwood, the 'Brewhouse', Poole, and the 'Forester's Arms', Frogham, on the edge of the New Forest, are the only ones I could confidently recommend to anyone with half an idea of what a good pub might be. And that's a very wide area, but, sort the transport out and I'd say that's one helluva pub crawl. Good beer, good food plus Poole Harbour, a market town, the Salisbury Plain, the New Forest, what more could you want..........
    One day, perhaps..........
Pubs are a hobby, real ale is a passion. Oh, and like me dogs, fear no evil..........

No good pubs we can walk to but a couple of Ember Inns a short bus ride.

Our recommended pubs would therefore be:

    Wellington Birmingham
    Anchor Digbeth
    Lamp Tavern Digbeth/Highgate
    Briar Rose (JDW) Birmingham

A crawl of these 4 make up a good couple of hours or so.

    Butchers Arms, Herne http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64090/

    Red Lion, Snargate http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59104/
Swan on the Green, West Peckham http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59087/

With several other Kent residents on the forums, I'm sure there will be other contenders...
As someone who lives in Kent (just) I'm almost ashamed to say that I have only done 2 of these (the Cock & the Red Lion) but it does give me a new task! I would probably add the multi award winning Bull at Horton Kirby to the list. http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/15817/. One of my local favourites is the Chequers at Farningham http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/15819/ but I haven't been there for some time - I really need to pay it a fresh visit and get a review posted.

    I am Kings Norton area.

Don't know anything around here really.

Go into spoons in Kings Heath and the 2 Ember Inns are the Red Lion - sometimes an Old one, up Vicarage Road and the Kings Arms at Alcester Lanes End.

I am in Sutton Coldfield. Never done the southern side of the city. Sutton is terrible for really good pubs.

As I mentioned in my earlier post on this thread, the Queslett is the best for real ale choice. Always 5 or 6 on and always excellent quality. Its an Ember Inn, but a really good one. Then there is the Duke in Sutton town centre. Good quality ales, but not always an inspired choice. And its quite pricey for a non-city centre pub.

In Boldmere, we have the Bishop Vesey which also has a very good range of ales, but its a Wetherspoons. Its good for its ales and it is (or was) in the GBG.

The Station at the top of Sutton has good beer, but its really loud and packed of an evening.

Even though its an Ember, the Queslett is the one I like to spend time in.

Our nearest village is Stanstead Abbotts in East Hertfordshire but I cant possibly describe the locals as "must visits".However in the nearby county town of Hertford ,where we used to live,The Old Cross Tavern www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55450/ is a must visit for real ale fans ,and a calm presence in the some times over lively night time economy in the town centre.Even Mrs Fastard feels comfortable in there........
