Default "Must visit" pubs in your area

Finding it hard to sleep on a hot summer night, I found myself wondering what pubs in my area I would recommend to a pub lover visiting for the first time.

So for Kent, I came up with this initial list of 10 (compiled on an entirely unscientific basis, and in alphabetical order):

    Artillery Arms, Ramsgate http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/16558/
    Butchers Arms, Herne http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/64090/
    Cock, Luddesdowne http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/16155/
    Elephants Head, Hook Green http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53081/
    Golding Hop, Plaxtol http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/16772/
    Halfway House, Brenchley http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/53015/
    King George V, Brompton http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/9862/
    Queens Arms, Cowden Pound http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/68476/
    Red Lion, Snargate http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59104/
Swan on the Green, West Peckham http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/59087/

I didn't deliberately choose a mixture of town, village and country pubs, but it just turned out that way. They also range from real ale specialists to one that just has a single draught beer of any any sort (Adnams, and famously "Lager not sold here").

With several other Kent residents on the forums, I'm sure there will be other contenders...

The trouble with this thread for me is going to be , define area !

As a resident in a London Post code I could take that to be London, but then where to start, or more pertinantly where to finish.

So I'll take the more restricted area of my Winchmore Hill / Southgate patch of N21 / N14 and consider visitors emerging from Winchmore Hill overland station and walking to leave by Southgate tube Station , or Vice Versa.

We're not blesses with any architechtural or decorative gems in this area, so the recommendation will be three solid local pubs where you will be guaranteed a decent welcome, civil conversation from the locals and a Landlord that knows how to run a decent community pub and keeps his real ale very well...

And here I would recommend ..

    The Orange Tree N21 http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/66045/
The Dog and Duck, N21 http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/52719/
    The Woodman, N14 http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/25600/

Shropshire covers quite a large area so sticking around the Telford area

    The All Nations , Madley
    The Royal Oak , Ellerdine
    The Three Horseshoes , Sambrook
The Bulls Head , Wrockwardine Wood
    The Cock Hotel , Wellington
    The Wrekin , Wellington
    The Blue Pig , Trench
    The Compases , Oakengates
    The Fighting Cocks , Oakengates
    The Crown , Oakengates
    The Station , Oakengates
    The Coalbrookdale , Oakengates

These are probally the best pubs round here

I could do one of the pubs in Shrewsbury , Bridgnorth and rural Shropshire , but the threads not long enough

In my town of 7 watering holes it must be The Rose and Lion , Bromyard one of Wye Vallery Brewery's own pubs.

Sticking to limited local area, and excluding Portsmouth / Southsea which have many I only have 4, only 2 of which, Red Lion, and possibly Bird in Hand, would be worth a special journey

Ship & Bell, Horndean - good ales, historical connection to Gales [next door to brewery], food & parking. Always reliable

Red Lion, Chalton - Hampshire's oldest pub,500 plus years. Real ales {Fuller's], great views, good food at times, and easy access from A3

Spotted Cow - Cowplain, good casque mark Fuller's pub, typical "road house" but never disappoints

Bird in Hand - Lovedean, good local Havant Brewery micro brewery offerings, thatched pub, large gardens and car park, great [not cheap] food, country setting. Ideal for sitting out enjoying a few pints with family or grandchildren. As a little plus, also had the FA cup lodged here during WW2 [Pompey won it 1939, sent here for safety]

I agree, best thing to do if you find yourself in Muswell Hill is to get on a bus and go somewhere else. The best local pub to me is the Elephant Inn in North Finchley, but being a Fullers pub it is very expensive.

Several pubs that I haven't been to here, but I'd like to add the Benenden Bull, the Black Lion at Lynstead, the lord Raglan at Rabbitt's Croos near Staplehurst, and venturing just out of Kent, the Salehurst Halt near Robertsbridge. Sorry, I'm too tired/lazy to link to these pubs.

I keep meaning to come up there and sample the delights!

I hear Wye Valley has a new pub opening soon, in a residential area of Hereford.

For me around here, I drink in my favourite pub, which for me as a semi-ticker (I like to try different beers, but don't keep a list of any sorts and will stick to one I really like) is ideal.

The only pub I haven't been in which I'd like to is the Griffen at Felinfach. A gastro pub, but it comes highly recommended for food, drink and a good night's kip.

The immediate area I live in is a bit of a pub desert. But here goes:

    The Queslett http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/38743/
    The Duke http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/68486/

In the wider area, two must visits are:

    The Red Lion http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37819/
    The Lord Clifden http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/37710/

    And a personal favourite:

    The White Swan http://www.pubsgalore.co.uk/pubs/55712/
