Default Beer of the Week (w/e 14th October 2018)

Sorry for the delay. Had a couple of nights in Shrewsbury and forgot.

I went out on Saturday evening so there were a few beers to choose from for me for BOTW. I have narrowed it down to these three:

    Stay Puft by Tiny Rebel
    Salted Caramel Lucaria by Thornbridge
Broken Dream Breakfast Stout by Siren Craft Brew

As you can see, the stouts and porters were doing it for me this week and the above were all excellent on cask at various establishments. I'm not sure I could single out one between the three, so I'm going to cheat and offer them all joint first place.

    Perhaps also worth a mention:

Deva Victrix by Brewhouse & Kitchen (Chester)

Just to slip a non-dark ale in there. That was really nice and refreshing and also on cask.

I won't list everything I tried over the week but a couple of trips out meant there were a few decent beers tried and in the whole it was a good week on that front.

Middle Levels,Nene Valley and Manchester ,where some fantastic ale was supped.

    Jennings -- Cocker Hoop*
Hop Back -- Summer Lightening *
    Titanic -- Anchor
    Wolf -- Lupus Lupus
    Digfield -- Chiff Chaff (3PT)
    Marston's (Banks's) -- Lancaster Bomber
    Holts -- Bitter
    Ridgeside -- Cascadia *
    Keith -- Stout Keith *
    Marple -- Pale *
    Oakham -- Deep Thought
    Blackjack -- Black Forest *
Blackjack -- Jack in the Box Pale *
Thornbridge -- Salted Caramel Lucaria *
    Tiny Rebel -- Juicy
    Titanic -- Plum Porter *
    Millstone -- Tiger Rut
    Pomona Island -- Pale Simcoe
Marble -- Uppe Hela Natten *
    Brightside -- The Mancunian *
    Brightside -- B Side

I'm with RARUK above, there were some great dark beers sampled in Manchester ,special mention to Marble Uppe Hela Natten and Thornbridge Salted Caramel Lucaria but BOTW goes to Marble Pale from the Marble Arch which did it for me.I treated myself ,£4.75 is pricey but I'm glad I didn't miss on out this new ale to me.The pub itself does offer Pint at £3.30 ,there is just a very wide pricing regime on real ale, especially at high ABV's.

    Kent:disappointing.

Whitstable-East India Pale Ale 4.1%abv:Woody,on its last legs.Prof Sarson was on his way.
Iron Pier-Cast Iron Stout 4.7% Lacklustre, from a newish Kent Brewery.
BOTW: a can of All in Jim from Time and Tide drunk indoors.

Reasonable week for me, with all the beers sampled on a mid-week wander round Leeds.

    Roosters - 24/7.
    Hambleton - Nightmare Porter.*
    Treboom - Kopstoot.
    Wishbone - Abyss.
    North Bar - Session Pale.
    Magic Rock - Ringmaster.
Northern Monk - Don't Mess with Manchester.*
    Wilde Child - Risk Avoidance.
    Rat - PyRATmania.
    Wilde Child - Event Horizon.
    Beer Studio - Burnished Gold.
Kirkstall - De Abdij & The Mill.*
    Sunbeam - Honey & Lavender.

Another one of those weeks where it was the dark beers that hit the spot, with the De Abdij and Nightmare both very good. The former, an oatmeal stout (6%), gets the nod. Sampled in Wapentake.

A fair choice last week :-

    Robinsons Dizzy Blonde 3.8%
    Holden's Black Country Bitter 3.9%
    Holt's Bitter 4.0%
    Silver Street Fire Island 4.0%
    Sadler's Mellow Yellow 4.1%
    Saltaire No 5 Stout 4.2%
    Brewsmith Gold 4.2%
    Robinson's Unicorn 4.2%
    Reunion Talwar 4.5%
Robinson's Kettle Head Chocolate Stout 4.5%
    Glamorgan Jemima's Pitchfork 4.5%
Bristol Beer Factory Milk Stout 4.5%
    Mobberley Taking The Pith 4.6%
    Robinson's Trooper (keg) 4.7%
    Marble American Amber 4.8%
    Titanic Plum Porter 4.9%
    Lincoln Green Quarterstaff 5.0%
Samuel Smith India Ale (bottle) 5.0%
    Holden's Special 5.1%
    Hook Norton Flagship 5.3%
    Rammy Craft Mango Beach 5.4%
    Oakham Black Hole Porter 5.5%
    Pheasantry Orange Pheasant 6.0%
    Titanic Iron Curtain 6.0%

I'm going for the Orange Pheasant as tried for £3.70 in the Lych Gate Tavern. It's not sweet for the ABV and has a quite subtle orange flavour in the background. It tasted like it's Seville oranges as there was no sweetness.

    BOTW Pheasantry Orange Pheasant

    A good wander around Leeds

    Shipyard, in the Cuthbert Brodrick
    Kirkstall Pale, in Veritas
    Ossett Excelsior, in the Hop
    Thornbridge Jaipur, in the Adelphi

It has to be the Jaipur, two of!

I also had a half of something very strong and unmemorable in Bundobust.

A bumper week compared to recent form:

    York Ghost
    Taylors Landlord
    Stella Artois Lager
    Theakstons Best Bitter
    Harrogate Vanilla Porter
    Kirkstall Black Band Porter
Tiny Rebel / Bristol Beer Factory Sugar Plum Shake
    Brightside The Mancunian
    Holts Bitter
    Ridgeside Plato
    Five Points Railway Porter
    Shiney Wrench
    Almasty Ale Exploration
    Thornbridge Lucaria
    Burning Sky Aurora
De Molen /Kirkstall De Abdij and The Mill
    Titanic Plum Porter
    Salopian Darwin's Origin
    Brouwerij Boon Lambic 2yr old
    Mallinsons DDH
    Tapp'd Mojo
    Alchemy Damon Milk Stout v3
    Allendale Pennine Pale
    Errant Whistler
    Tyne Bank Northern Porter
    Cobra Lager
    Hop & Cleaver Porter
    Goose Island IPA
    Out There Brewing Alpha Lupi
    Turning Point Lucid Dream
    North Riding Peanut Butter Stout
    Mordue Workie Ticket
    Anarchy Simcoe
    Gt Yorkshire Blackout Porter

Difficult choice not only for BOTW but also sadly for the worst kept beer. Anyhoo BOTW has to be dark again Thornbridge Lucaria just pipping the Alchemy, the Turning Point and the North Riding.

    Gentle:

    Jennings Cocker Hoop
    Hop Back Summer Lightening
    Titanic Iron Curtain*
    Digfield Chiffchaff
    Oakham Bishops Farewell*

All of these were decent although neither the Cocker Hoop nor the Summer Lightening seemed quite as good as I've had in the past. Perhaps I just didn't have enough of them.
BOTW Titanic Iron Curtain. A 6% Russian Imperial Stout which was an ideal end to a pleasant evening.

    A somewhat belated entry,

    Thornbridge Wild Swan
    Thornbridge Salted Caramel Lucaria
    Shindigger West Coast Pale
    Blackjack The Pokies
    Marble Pale
    Marble/Takk Uppe Helle Natten
    JW Lees MPA
    Mallisons Columbus
    Mallisons DDH
    Kettle Head Chocolate Stout
    Ridgeside Plato
    Keith Pale Keith
    Siren Suspended in Blank
    Siren Shattered Dream
    Saltaire Triple Chocoholic
    Oakham Deep Thought
Brew By Numbers DDH Pale Ale
    Bristol Beer Co Unplanned Nights
    Salopian Darwins Origin
    Rammy Craft ?
    Brightside Hoppy Mancunian Blonde
    Brightside Odin
    Brightside The Mancunian
    Cobra (Lager)
    Ilkley Smoked Witch
    Holts Two Hoots
    Pamona Pale
    Northern Monk Eternal
    Robinsons Trooper
    Flowerpots Perridge Pale
    Wantsum Green Hop Fuggles
    Great Newsom Holderness Dark

Had some good beer in Manchester and the winner was taken in Manchester but from a brewery only seven miles from my home, It was also the strongest at 9.1% and thereby by far the most expensive,
BOTW is Siren Shattered Dream, which is basically a barrel aged stronger version of CBBB Broken Dream aged in Bourbon Casks, setting me back £4.00 for a third in the excellent Port Street Beer House. I made several visits to this pub.

My future lists are not likely to be anywhere near as extensive for some time to come.
