Sad news indeed. Have enjoyed reading his blog over the years, especially when you are familiar with the areas he has travelled, but even if not his unique no nonsense take on things was good to read regardless.

The man is a machine when it comes to pub crawls. Hope his final days are as painless as possible.

That would be a fitting memorial. Make mine a half of Shippos - in all 23 pubs!

Don't forget, to do the "Full Winfield" justice, every 4th pub has to be John Smith's Smooth Crap (or half of Guinness substitute).

Very saddened to hear this news. I'd like to express my thanks to Al for his sizable contribution to documenting pub history - I know I've found some great old school boozers that I might otherwise have passed by thanks to his reviews and those photos collected over the years are an incredible historical archive which I've enjoyed looking through on his blog. My thoughts go out to Al and his family.

Really sad to hear this, been catching up with a lot of his old reviews and he was a one of a kind pub man that had a genuine enthusiasm for the places he visited. And who can forget his eternal catchphrases, 'keg crap', 'this was a poor drink'. You will be missed Alan.

So sad. I concur with Gann - a 'Winfield' is now, in my mind, a day's pub crawl containing 20+ visits, and Pubsignman's comments about the treasure trove of photos and reviews he has provided over a lifetime of passionate pub ticking makes me realise that there's something of substance in the pub odyssey I decided to take, over six years ago (after the disappointment of BITE) now I've found this website.

Very sad news indeed. I can however say I've done a Full Winfield with him and it was a pleasure. Thought's with him, family and friends in these sad times.
