Shut up about Barclay Perkins - Let’s brew 1935 Barclay Perkins A
Visit the Shut up about Barclay Perkins site
Great news! I managed to find the missing folder where the 1935 Barclay Perkins brewing records are. That’s a relief. I’ll explain later how it happened.
This is the weakest of the three Milds in the parti-gyle. Really this is the descendent of WW I Government Ale, which was later called Ale 4d when the old name was forbidden. The government wasn’t too happy about being associated with watery beer for some reason. It came in two versions A and RA (Royal Ale), the only difference being that RA was given triple the rate of priming sugar, raising the effective OG to 1033º. Both versions retailed for 4d per pint.
Other than that, it’s much the same as XX, just a good bit weaker. Oddly enough, while X and XX both came in semi-dark and dark versions, this beer was only available as semi-dark. No idea why that might be.
