Probably one for Alan Winfield I suppose! One flaw, it doesn't allow for the loss of self direction that can occur for some reason at around the gallon mark. Splendid plug for Pubs Galore though!!
    Ok, maybe just for one......................

Interesting number of pubs i.e 24727.

We have almost 50.000, they must have excluded bars etc or something.
A pub is for life not just for Christmas

    It also insults Pubs Galore!

"It's not every pub in the country, just the 24,727 on Pubs Galore"

What about the other 24,901!! Not much of a maths team are they?

The site of the actual study explains how the 24,727 pubs were selectd:

"The Pubs Galore site states: "We have the largest list of pubs in the UK kept up to date by our dedicated members." The list is indeed extensive, totaling more than 80,000 locations.

For our data set, we pruned the full list. First, based on names, we removed establishments that seemed more like restaurants than public houses. So TGI Friday's was out and the The Plough and Horses was in. Second, we took only the first location of pubs that had a number of branches in the same town. Third, we removed any pub that was marked as permanently closed by the members of Pubs Galore. Finally, we removed several pubs that could not be reached by foot, such as those located in airport terminals.

We were left with 24,727 locations, covering England (22,044), the Ilse of Man (19), Northern Ireland (240), Scotland (1,186), and Wales (1,238). With this much data, there are bound to be a few errors, such as unmarked pub closings. But the Pubs Galore team has created a very accurate data set and we are in their debt for providing the material for an ultimate UK pub crawl."

It looks like they excluded pubs with 'Hotel' in their name, which wiped out huge numbers in rural Scotland/Wales.

The wording in the Guardian has been changed a couple of times, but it now makes more sense and is no longer suggesting we only have 24,727 pubs.

Anyhow, thank you to everyone who has contributed to creating the 'very accurate data set'

Just seems a complete waste of time as a smart phone, internet connection and a sense of direction will achieve what they spent 2 years doing. Just needs the UPS right turn approach adopted to it...

Smartphone? Internet connection? You've not been drinking in bits of Yorkshire, northern Scotland or wildest Wales then?

Sadly the BBC Today programme reviewing a copy article in the Sun said the pub crawl was round the 24,727 pubs in the UK, utterly clueless

The "Metro" has got it more incorrect than the "Grauniad" did before their two edits.

“It accounts for a pint in all of Britain’s 24,727 pubs on a 28,270-mile route and would take years to get from start to finish.

Researchers spent two years mapping out the route, which visits all the watering holes featured on the Pubs Galore website.”
