Tom Woods brewery have went into administration but have been in trouble since 2014.Apparently they brew 170,000 pints of beer a week.
Sentinal Brewery are reported to be in trouble owing £800,000 but the owner said they are still trading.
Ascot ales have changed their name to Ascot Brewing co and have re-badged their beers with new names for Alligator ,Posh Pooch etc to more horse racing themed names.
I had a brief chat with Tom Woods earlier in the year and he took a bit of a generalised swipe at the newer London breweries which I thought was completely unwarranted. Apparently a group of probably wealthy locals are buying out the brewery where he will stay as head or the brewer. I don't recall them selling to JDW on a national basis recently but they had a distribution arm that presumably dealt with the likes of Punch and Enterprise with the same sort of margins as JDW.
There seems to be a pattern developing here in that the old school brewers from twenty or more years ago are being squeezed out by the more successful and less conservative new kids on the block.
I wonder how Cotleigh are doing.
The old school brewer like Tom Woods and Cotleigh will find it hard to sell beer in London unless they sell it cheap.London is awash with beers from London brewers as the pubs now seem to think that beer should be local. I am sick and tired of the same London brewed beers taking over every new pub that opens but maybe that's what the public want.Tom Woods wants to start brewing better beer imo. 2000+ breweries in Britain. Its dog eat dog.
Miss the Wrekin/Ironbridge Brewery , their Barrel aged Wenlock stout was stunning and the Ironbridge Gold was very good and very cheap , £2.50 for a 4.4%
