Me too, but there have been some mis-steps since Marstons acquired Jennings, with the 3.5% Bitter in particular a shadow of its former self, in my opinion (and now not even called bitter any more). A few years back Sneck Lifter seemed (to my taste buds) to have been brewed with a pale ale malt instead of roasted, and then coloured with caramel, presumably as a cost saving measure. It was back to its normal self before Covid, but more expensive than it used to be - now it's not even mentioned on their website (though this may be because of the pandemic too).

But Marstons plc is no longer a brewery anyway?

That's a good point.Maybe it makes it more likely that Carlsberg will buy the 40% stake in Carsberg Marstons Brewing that they don't already own and which is currently owned by Marston's PLC.

Indeed, if Marstons is taken over, the new owners wish to sell, and Carlsberg wish to buy, and that's when people probably need to start worrying... because, whatever you think about Marstons, its key brands are real ales, and it has kept open its six breweries following acquisitions in recent years.
    • Park Brewery, Wolverhampton
    • Marston's Brewery, Burton upon Trent
    • Jennings Brewery, Cockermouth
    • Wychwood Brewery, Witney
    • Ringwood Brewery, Ringwood
    • Eagle Brewery, Bedford

    Default How about this takeover?

Exciting news for St. Peter's Brewery!: "St. Peter's Brewery sold to private investors!"

They certainly haven't improved any beers they've acquired, in my view.

But would you seek out beers from those breweries now?

I used to drink a lot of Ringwood Best, Pedigree and Jennings Cumberland, all now shadows of their former incarnations. I suspect dumb downed ingredients and shortened production times.
