It is best to head up to the Old Town, plenty of decent pubs up there plus a couple of Spoons, make sure you go in to Walters a crap name for a pub but lots of real ales on,it is also worth going to the Minerva for the views from the bar alone.

Only had time on my single visit to do a quick spin round the three central 'spoons whilst waiting for a change of trains. Of these, the Admiral of the Humber looked dull but turned out to be quite good, the William Wilberforce very much the opposite and the Three John Scotts being somewhere in between.

    Must Do's

    Walters
    Wm. Hawkes
    The Lion and Key
    Ye Olde Black Boy

    Try also

    The Manchester Arms
    Sailmakers Arms
    The Minerva
    The Old English Gentleman
    The Hop & Vine
The Three John Scotts (JD Wetherspoon)
    The Whalebone

If there's a chance you could get up to Newland give me a shout as there's several bars up there worth a look.

The Whalebone was a brewpub when we were there, but I believe they have stopped brewing recently. There are 11 pubs in GBG now, but we have only done the Whalebone and 3 John Scotts from those listed.Nelly's and Walters were the other 2 we went to, but that was in 2010, so things may have changed.
